Enhanced Language Training (ELT) Immigration in Durham Region Interesting stats…  *Between 2001 and 2006 Durham Region’s immigrant population increased by 19%, representing 20% of the total population and 34% of Durham Region’s overall population growth.  *Between 2008 and 2036 it is estimated that Durham Region’s immigrant population will increase annually by 3%.  Implications: Employers who take into consideration Durham’s changing labour force when establishing recruitment and workplace practices, will greatly benefit from accessing a talented pool of internationally trained professionals. *Source: Community Development Council of Durham, Research Brief, Feb/10 – ‘Immigration in the Region of Durham: Growth of Community’ 2

Enhanced Language Training (ELT) Program Overview Historical Overview  Delivered by the Durham Continuing Education since  Funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.  Assists 54 internationally trained professionals (ITPs) annually.  Has assisted 250 (ITPs) since  Has partnered with over 150 employers since its inception.  Established long-term and on-going employer relationships. 3

Enhanced Language Training (ELT) Program Overview 16 Week Program Full Time Day Sessions 3 Locations - Oshawa, Pickering & Ajax 8 week in-class portion Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 2:00 pm Durham Continuing Education 120 Centre Street South, Oshawa 9:00 am to 2:30 pm Welcome Centre Pickering Bayly Street, Pickering Welcome Centre Ajax Fairall Street, Ajax Internship or Mentoring Up to 8 weeks (40 days) internship workplace experience or mentoring 5

Enhanced Language Training (ELT) Registration/Eligibility  Newcomer to Canada and internationally trained professional.  Updated language assessment required (completed within the past six months).  Professionals with advanced English language proficiency skills (CLB 6+).  Permanent Resident (Landed Immigrant), Convention Refugee and Protected Persons (Section 95).  Clear ‘Criminal Reference Check’ (Volunteer Sector). Participant Eligibility Requirements 6

Enhanced Language Training (ELT) Supports Provided to ITPs via ELT  Childcare assistance to eligible clients during in-class and internship training.  Transportation assistance to eligible clients during 16 week program. 7

Enhanced Language Training (ELT) Mentoring - The Benefits  Professional development of leadership, coaching and management skills.  Personal gratification and sense of ‘giving back’.  On-going support from placement coordinator.  Access to highly skilled professionals to address gaps in human resources during peak business and vacation times.  Access to an expanded pool of potential employees.  Workplace health insurance coverage for all interns. 8

Enhanced Language Training (ELT) Becoming an Internship Supervisor 1.Contact the ELT placement coordinator to review your workplace needs. 2.Suitable ELT participant resumes will be forwarded directly to you. 3.You select the participants that you wish to interview. 4.A preliminary interview meeting is arranged between you and the identified candidate. 5.A Workplace Education Agreement (a workplace health and safety insurance document) is signed by the host employer, placement coordinator and successful candidate indicating the placement start and end dates. 6.The selected candidate commences the internship and completes a mid-way and final exit interview. 9

Enhanced Language Training (ELT) Becoming a Mentor 1.Contact the ELT placement coordinator. 2.A suitable ELT participant will be matched with you. 3.The placement coordinator will facilitate a preliminary ‘meeting’ between the mentor and mentee. 4.Mentees and mentors establish ‘their mentoring process’ (e.g. in person, via phone or ). 5.‘Meeting’ frequency is mutually agreed to by the mentor and mentee. 6.A Workplace Education Agreement (a workplace health and safety insurance document) is signed by the mentor, the placement coordinator and successful candidate indicating the mentorship start and end dates. 10

Enhanced Language Training (ELT) Mentor vs. Intern Supervisor Mentor Purpose: To provide career guidance, coaching and networking advice. Commitment Level: Less frequent and mutually agreed to by the mentor and mentee. Intern Supervisor Purpose: To provide daily, on-site direction and coaching in the workplace.  Commitment Level: On-going and daily for (up to) an 8 week internship placement period. 11
