Assalaamu Alaikum! (Peace be on to you) Do you have children who attend elementary or high school in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby or Oshawa? This network is to help give Muslim parents a voice in their child’s education system. Please let us share this responsibility by getting motivated and involved. Network Purpose: More and more Muslims are moving into the Durham region and the Durham District School Board, through the Equity, Diversity and Race Relations and the Ontario Ministry of Education, is working with Muslim parents to get their involvement into the public school education system. The more we work together, the better off all children will be. How you can get involved: We need to assist the Durham District School Board with adopting a “Muslim student friendly” policy and practices similar to the Toronto District School Board. For example; Halal pizza choices at school lunches (e.g. without pepperoni) How to deal with exams that fall during Eid time Religious accommodations for Muslim students Help parents understand curriculum, report cards, anti- bullying policies, and joining School Community Council. Contact:Br. Alimamy Bangura (of MENTORS Canada Sr. Anela by Please Sr. Anela above with your name, telephone number and address to join this group. Also, kindly circulate this information to other parents who are interested in being part of this initiative. The Durham Muslim Parents in Public Education in partnership with the Muslim Education Network October, Assalamu Alaikum Invitation to: Imaams in the Durham Region -Pickering Islamic Centre -Ajax Masjid -Whitby Masjid -Oshawa Masjid Dear Imam and Committee members: Success is from Allah alone. Speaker:Br. Alimamy Bangura, Chair of the Durham Muslim parents in Public Education. We are inviting you and other Muslim leaders in Durham Region to discuss the current situation of Muslim children in the public school system and ways to make it a “Muslim friendly” place. We hope to work closely with you all as we explore issues that face our children in public schools and as we work towards implementing solutions. We’ve already met with the Durham District School Board executives and the Ministry of Education. Our meetings have been promising to date, however, we need more Muslim leaders and parents to participate – for the sake of our children. As leaders in the community, we believe that your assistance and co- operation in this endeavour is vital to our children’s progress and to Muslim families. To give you a better understanding of our aims, kindly refer to information shown at the left of this invitation. JazakumAllahu khayran for your support and cooperation. We look forward to meeting with you on Oct 28 th insha'Allah. Kindly respond to Sr Anela by of your attendance. If you have questions, please contact Br. Bangura or Sister Anela (info at left).
