What is a Pharmacy VALOR Program? Durham VA Medical Center Information Veterans Affairs Learning Opportunities Pharmacy Residency Program Durham VA Medical Center What is a Pharmacy VALOR Program? VALOR, or Veterans Affairs Learning Opportunities Residency, is an honors program that provides opportunities for outstanding students to develop competencies in pharmacy practice while working at an approved VA healthcare facility. The VALOR program focuses on development of skills and knowledge required for pharmacy practice by providing competency based practice experiences under the supervision of a clinical pharmacist preceptor. Durham VA Medical Center Information The Durham VA Medical Center (DVAMC) is a 271-bed tertiary care referral, teaching and research facility affiliated with the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy, Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the Duke University School of Medicine. The Medical Center provides general and specialty medical, surgical, psychiatric inpatient and ambulatory services, and serves as a major referral center for North Carolina, southern Virginia, northern South Carolina, and eastern Tennessee. In addition, it serves as a referral center for high-risk open-heart surgery cases, angioplasty, and hemodynamic cardiac catheterization. The Medical Center is committed to the needs of the Veteran, as demonstrated by the research, education and clinical practice programs available throughout the institution.  Program Description Number of Positions: 2 Appointment Period: Approximately 40 hours per week for 10 weeks during the summer months; potential for a two year commitment; anticipated start date early June Areas may include: Outpatient/ Inpatient Pharmacy, Formulary Management, Geriatrics, Internal Medicine, Ambulatory Care, Drug Information, Nutrition, Anticoagulation Educational Opportunities: Medical Center and pharmacy resident orientation, projects, multidisciplinary team meetings, grand rounds, case/ drug monograph presentations, topic discussions, book/journal clubs, patient education and medication counseling, shadow experiences, restricted medication evaluation  

VALOR Benefits: Eligibility Criteria: Highly Competitive Salary Exposure to Federal Pharmacy Practice Potential to be hired above minimum entry salary after graduation Eligibility Criteria:  Completion of the second year of an accredited School or College of Pharmacy Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale on coursework taken in pharmacy school United States citizen Meet physical examination standards if selected Able to complete 400 hours during the summer (typically June-September) Able to provide own housing NOTE: Students with a service obligation to any Federal, State, or private institution, or recipients of any Federal scholarships are ineligible  Application Packet Should Include: Cover letter Curriculum Vitae Official transcript Letter of nomination from the Dean/Director of School or College of Pharmacy verifying completion of second year of pharmacy school by May 2014, full-time status, and anticipated graduation within two years of VALOR entry Durham VA Pharmacy VALOR application Completed applications must be received by February 28, 2014.
