Did WWI heighten tensions within Wilhemine Germany? C aim – to consolidate knowledge about this question and reach a judgement B aim – to develop understanding and reach a judgement A/A* aim – to argue for both sides and reach a judgement Look at your mind-map you did for homework and highlight everything that shows a heightening of tensions in one colour, and everything that shows that tensions didn’t heighten in another colour.

Burgfriede to Division Clarification of Siegfried – means ‘a victory peace’ or when WWI would be won and peace would prevail in Europe. Most people won this. Change your tables to Burgfried to division. Why did Siegfried emerge? To answer complaints about peace, arguing that peace would be reached by winning the war. How far did this shift occur? Total War What caused this to occur?

How far did opposition to the war change from 1914 to 1918? Use these points... USPD – speedy end to the war and constitutional reform Spartacus League – wanted to end the war and have a socialist revolution More strikes and demonstrations Centre Party 1917, Erzberger, ‘The Reichstag strives for a peace of understanding and permanent reconciliation of peoples. Forced territorial acquisitions and political, economic and financial oppressions are irreconcilable with such a peace.’ Peace resolution passed by 212 votes to 126.

How far was Germany polarised by WWI? Supreme Army Command continued with pursuing an aggressive war of expansion and striving to unite all Germans behind it in a Burgfriede. Hindenburg, Ludendorff, Tirpitz and Kapp formed the Fatherland Party which was very conservative and backed by industrialists. They campaigned for Seigfriede well into 1918 when it was clearly unrealistic. The left – wanted a compromised peace without annexation and they wanted constitutional reform. Inspired by Russia. USPD, Spartakist League and strikes.

Quick Quiz Answer the questions on your sheet.
