THE HERO MENTOR HERALD TRICKSTER SHADOW THRESHOLD GUARDIAN SHAPESHIFTER Usually a positive figure teaches or trains the hero. Often gives the hero gifts to aid him / her on their journey. Comes from the Greek goddess Athene, who appeared to Telemachus as an old man named “Mentor” THE HERO

THE HERO MENTOR HERALD TRICKSTER SHADOW THRESHOLD GUARDIAN SHAPESHIFTER This archetype represents the power of the hero’s dark side. The shadow possesses most or all the noble traits of the hero. Creates conflict and often puts the hero in a life-threatening situation Always humanized with a touch of goodness or some admirable quality. THE HERO SHADOW

Rising Action The events in a story that provide information about the character and heighten suspense.

Climax Occurs after the rising action where the main character is forced to make a decision; often the highest point of interest.

Dénouement Where the falling action and the resolution of the conflict occurs

Conflict There are six basic conflicts found in literature. These are divided into two groups: Internal & External

Internal Conflict Character vs. Self

External Conflict Character vs.: Character Unknown/Supernatural Technology Society Nature

Characterization Method used by the author to describe the main characters in a story There are two types…

Dynamic A character who changes or develops during the story

Static A character who doesn’t change over the course of the story

Protagonist The central character of interest

Antagonist The force that opposes the protagonist

Symbol an object that suggests meaning beyond the literal/obvious meaning

Irony The twisting or foiling of expectations

Flashback going back to an earlier time in the story

Hyperbole An intended exaggeration used for emphasis

Simile An indirect comparison of two unlike things; saying one thing is “like” or “as” the other

Metaphor A direct comparison of two unlike things; saying one thing is the other.

Personification Giving human qualities to something that is essentially nonhuman

Allusion Reference to a historical, literary, political, psychological, or social person, place thing, idea, or event

Alliteration The repetition of the initial consonant sound on the first/stressed syllable of subsequent words

Onomatopoeia When a word “sounds” like the sound it makes
