Kennings Poetic synonyms found in Germanic poetry A descriptive phrase or compound word that substitutes for a noun Examples: “The Almighty’s enemy” and “sin-stained demon” are used in place of Grendel’s name

Alliteration The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words Used to emphasize particular words, images, heighten moods, or create musical effects. Also, used in oral tradition for memorization. Example: The ancient blade broke, bit into The monster’s skin, drew blood…

Rhythm Pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry. Brings out musical quality in language, emphasis in ideas, unifies main ideas, heightens emotional response and creates mood.
