ACADEMIA NACIONAL DE CIENCIAS DE HONDURAS III IANAS MEETING Ottawa, Ontario, Canada 26 – 28 August, 2010

SCIENCE IN HONDURAS Honduras initiated its independent life as one of the United Provinces of Central America Right after independence from Spain in 1821, the Provinces got to be anexed to Mexico In 1823 this agreement was banned and the 5 provinces became independent countries

UNIVERSITIES By then only Guatemala as capital of the Capitanía General, had the University of San Carlos, in Central America. By 1847, in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, the “Sociedad del Genio Emprendedor y del Buen Gusto” was created. In September 13 the same year was declared University of Honduras by President Juan N. Fernández Lindo.

ACADEMY OF SICENCES In 1957 it was transformed in Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras. In the late 70s the Academia Nacional de Ciencias de Honduras began its meetings at University campus. In 1983 it was recognized by the government as an NGO, with 10 founder members, and has worked intermitentely

ACADEMY OF SCIENCES It was reactivated a few years ago after Dr. Samayoa and her interest in organize our Academy. Since then we have incorporated several members each year. We hold an annual year at the end of November in honor of our first scientis and Independence ideologist José C. del Valle

ACADEMY OF SCIENCES Currently the Academy has 35 members, 5 of them are no longer with us. The govermnent supressed the Consejo Hondureño de Ciencia y Tecnología, but an Office of Technological Innovation remains Instead a new Minister of Science and Technology, and promised support for the Academy and a place for our sessions
