Anthony emmott 4th Year PHarmacology Pharmacology (PCTH) Anthony emmott 4th Year PHarmacology

So you become a pharmacist right?... Pharmacology Pharmacy Undergraduate Science Degree Theoretical Study of drugs & How they interact with our body Careers: Research Pharmaceutical companies Academia Further education Medicine Dentistry Professional School Clinical Application Do learn about pharmacology Patient Interaction Become a pharmacist Look closely – mostly 3rd yr courses Closer – PCTH300 = 6 cr, 302 = 3 cr (but year long labs) So 2 yr-long lectures and 2 yr-long labs  lab reports It does get a lot easier in 4th yr though. But 3rd yr is pretty stacked  if you know you’re slow, don’t overload ur 3rd yr! limit your extracurriculars

PCTH Lectures Many different instructors Super Interesting Pros and cons Super Interesting Physiology  Pathophysiology  Pharmacology Receptor + Substrate  Effect

An Example Physiology: understanding how the airway works Pathophysiology: understanding an asthmatic’s airway Pharmacology: coming up with a way to improve the asthmatic’s airway Pharmacology: β2-adrenergic receptor agonist (Salbutamol) dilates the bronchiole muscle I would like to tell you the 3Fs. That I learned a very hard way, throughout the whole yr. If you’re perfectionist, but you’re really slow at life, AND you’re busy  sorry If you’re very high achieving, you’re prob going to dismiss what I say, but let me tell you what happened to me. -2wks to write, stuck on intro forever -what happened to me the day before the due date? I was STILL on the intro Because wanted to be precise but concise. On the day it was due, went to class to record lectures, still did not pay attention I was not even half done  missed the first hour of lab. No printer  borrowed roommates Submitted half-finished. No results whatsoever, just discussion

PCTH Lab Exciting, hands-on techniques Small groups Lab reports… Cannulations Anesthesia Small groups Lab reports… Individual vs. Group Debates

Cool! How do I get in? Calendar Average Talk to Dr. Karim Safe: > 90% Talk to Dr. Karim karim@interchange.ubc.ca Look closely – mostly 3rd yr courses Closer – PCTH300 = 6 cr, 302 = 3 cr (but year long labs) So 2 yr-long lectures and 2 yr-long labs  lab reports It does get a lot easier in 4th yr though.
