Boy's hair touching the ears wasn't allowed, punishable by expulsion from school. Most girls weren't allowed to wear pants, and boys weren't allowed to wear blue jeans. Many parents were worried about their daughters adoring black rock musicians, fearing the possibility of racial union. Hot rods were considered dangerous they were considered a menace to public safety. Dancing to rock n'roll music was often banned, with school and teen dances shut down.

Teenagers in the 60’s The sixties were the age of youth, as 70 million children from the post-war baby boom became teenagers and young adults. There was a major change in popular music in the mid-1960's, caused in part by the drug scene. Acid Rock, highly amplified and improvisational, and the more mellow psychedelic rock gained prominence. The musical phenomena of the decade was Woodstock, a three day music festival that drew 400,000 hippies and featured peace, love, and happiness...and LSD.

For recreation they went to movies, skating rinks, bowling, sports, dancing, music, and reading. They watched television in the evenings together, instead of everyone having their own TV in their bedroom and watching by themselves. And there wasn't as much violence in television, either. There weren't as many working moms, so there were more mothers were at home when children got home from school.

Teenagers in the 70’s Advances in civil rights, increased influence of the women's movement. Disco music became very popular amongst teenagers. Mood rings, lava lamps, Rubik's cube, Sea Monkeys and smiley face stickers all captured the imagination of Americans during this decade.

Pop music splintered into a multitude of styles: soft rock, hard rock, country rock, folk rock, punk rock -­ and the dance craze of the decade, disco! Probably the most noticeable change in fashion was the creation of the punk movement. This style was heavily influenced by musicians of this era, including the Sex Pistols and the Ramones.

Teenagers in the 80’s The 1980s became the Me! Me! Me! generation of status seekers. Cable was born and MTV, originally intended to be promos for albums, had an enormous impact on music and young people. Dances learned on MTV included slam dancing, lambada, and break dancing. Pop, rock, new wave, punk, country, and especially rap or hip hop became popular in the 80s.

Michael Jackson's album Thriller became the best selling album of all time. During the mid-eighties, the Madonna era began, and girls everywhere copied the daring styles worn by the singer. In their spare time on the weekends, teenagers could often be found in night clubs and cocktail clubs, listening and break- dancing to dance, hip-hop, rap or "synthesizer music."

Teenagers in the 90’s The '90s has been an era of education. Most teens have been introduced to modern equipment such as the Internet, digital cameras, compact discs and DVD players. There was also awareness raised about many different causes, such as AIDS, cancer, racism, homosexuality, women's issues and teen pregnancy.

The fashion of the decade began with Grunge on one hand and preppie on the other. Similarly to the 1980s, rock music was also very popular in the 1990s, grunge, Britpop, industrial rock and other alternative rock music emerged and took over as the most popular of the decade, as well as pop punk, ska punk and nu- metal, amongst others.

2000 up to now The growth of the Internet was one of the prime contributors to globalization during the decade, making it possible for people to interact with other people, express ideas, introduce others to different cultures and backgrounds, use goods and services, sell and buy online, research and learn about anything, along with experiencing the whole world without having to leave home.

By the 2000s, Rap and Hip Hop had reached their commercial peaks, and the genre continued to dominate the music scene of the decade. During leisure time, kids spend much time watching television, listening to music or playing computer games. Teen fashion fads of the decade are a mix of styles from the last couple of decades updated and given a modern twist to bring them into the 21st century.
