AAW focused on three key areas 2

AAW Support 3 This year nearly 700 people attended a week-long series of events. Of the student participants, 73.3% were undergraduates and 26.7% from graduate programs. 56 UTEP & community participants were part of the AAW organizational committee.

Student Learning Objectives As a result of attending the Ability Awareness Week activities: Students will be able to identify educational and environmental barriers that are obstacles for students with disabilities. Students will learn terms that are appropriate for describing people with disabilities based on people first language. Major Impact Of the attendees, 89.58% reported that they had learned something new as a result of their participation. In addition, 91.43% said that they would recommend others attend the event next year. Eighty-nine percent of the respondents who attended the Photovoice seminar indicated that the participatory action encouraged by Photovoice can be used to reach policy-makers and enable social change on our campus and in our community. Of the attendees, 89.58% reported that they had learned something new as a result of their participation. In addition, 91.43% said that they would recommend others attend the event next year. Major Impact As a result of Photovoice student and staff members can take pictures of parking violations and based on these pictures these vehicles can be cited by parking and transportation.

Four individuals and the University Communications Department received recognition awards for their work on behalf of UTEP students with disabilities. From their Photovoice presentation in 2012, five student presenters have since seen resolution of six environmental barriers on campus as identified through their photographs. Media coverage of AAW Professional media coverage of AAW reached the El Paso/Juarez binational community through both local and international news media, including TV channels KFOX 14, KTSM 9, Univision 26, and the El Paso Times newspaper and the Mexican newspaper El Diario de Juarez. On campus, UTEP News and The Prospector kept the university community informed and promoted the importance of awareness in promoting and recognizing the contributions of those with disabilities. Suggestions Invite more student organizations to participate as service projects. The "In their shoes" activity was powerful but a bit disorganized. There were not more sensitivity trainings available to attend. There weren't enough seats in the conference areas on the conferences that took place on Friday, October 17 th.
