Parenting Styles

Describe your family We are very close We are somewhat close We are not too close We are not close at all

Families that were not close reported that they - Weren’t happy most of the time Felt life was boring Felt they have less fun than most people Seldom felt close to people Didn’t care about getting along with their parents Were not concerned about living up to their religious and moral training Felt that they were not getting a good education and did not expect to go to college

Parenting Style Definition Parenting is a complex activity Parenting style refers to two specific parts of parenting: Parental Permissiveness Parental Strictness

Parental Permissiveness Refers to the extent to which parents intentionally foster individuality, self- regulation, and self-assertion by being attuned, supportive, and accommodating to children’s special needs and demands.

Parental Strictness Refers to the claims parents make on children to become integrated into the family whole, by their maturity demands, supervision, disciplinary efforts, and willingness to confront the child who disobeys.

Four Parenting Styles Indulgent Parent Strict Parent Neglectful Parent Balanced Parent

Indulgent Parent High degree of warmth and affection shown Few rules given or enforced
