What are the different types? Just as in music, or film, there are different genres, or types of photography. These range from the delicate art of fine art photography, to the more hardcore sports photography.

Photojournalism Photojournalism is the use of images to tell a news story Has become more and more popular Can be more powerful than the written story Famous Photographer: Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971), Eddie Adams (1933-2004) won the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Vietnam War

Margaret Bourke-White She began to study photography as a hobby while a very young woman. Margaret Bourke-White is a woman of many firsts. She was a forerunner in the newly emerging field of photojournalism, and was the first female to be hired as such. In 1929 she was the first photographer for Fortune magazine. She was the first female photojournalist for Life magazine, soon after its creation in 1935, and one of her photographs adorned its first cover (November 23, 1936). She was the first female war correspondent and the first to be allowed to work in combat zones during World War II, and one of the first photographers to enter and document the death camps. Eddie Adams Adams was a photojournalist during the Vietnam War. Adams' close-up portraits and emphasis on intimate storytelling presented a new way to photograph war.  In addition to photographing 13 wars, his images of politics, fashion and show business appeared on countless magazine covers and newspapers around the world.

He has produced a large collection of work which represents a powerful expression of the beauty and grandeur of the animal kingdom in this part of the world. Yann Arthus-Bertrand French photographer, journalist, reporter and environmentalist. While in Africa, he earned his living as a hot-air balloon pilot. This was when he really discovered the earth from above and the advantages of viewing what he was studying from afar to gain an overall picture of an area and its resources. He discovered his calling: to demonstrate the Earth’s beauty and show the impact of mankind on the Planet.

Edward Weston Still Life Photography gets its roots from the romanticism of traditional painting techniques, illustrating the natural world as it appears in the artist’s mind. Still life photographers transform ordinary scenes into a story by using varieties in texture, color, highlights, and shadows. Traditional still life photography places great emphasis on simplicity.

Fine Art Photography Fine art photography overlaps many genres of photography, as it is developed primarily for aesthetics and/or concept rather than function. photographs that are created to fulfill the creative vision of the artist.  Stands in contrast to photojournalistic and commercial genres Does not focus on selling products or services

Man Ray & Bill Brandt Fine art photography refers to photographs that are created in accordance with the creative vision of the photographer as artist. Usually seen on the walls of museums and galleries. Man Ray was an American modernist artist who spent most of his career in Paris, he worked with alternative processes and the human figure while focusing on light and shadow. Bill Brandt worked with people of Great Britain to produce a body of photographic works that range from realism to abstraction.

Nature Nature photography is an umbrella term incorporating landscape, wildlife, and plant photography. Many nature photographers try to educate people about the beauty of nature, often with the hope that more people will be inspired to help the environment Famous Photographer: Eliot Porter
