Lenten Journey with Jesus Week 4: Pictures Around Caesarea Philippi

This is the waterfall at Caeserea Philipi which is the start of the Jordan River. It is breathtaking and the waterfalls are quite loud.

Same picture as above but at a lower elevation, the air around the water falls is crisp and clean, very lush too with green vegetation and lots of flowers.

Above you can see the opening of the cave which is called “the gates of hell” as we read in the gospels. They are hard to see but just to the right of the large cave you will see some niches in the rock. In the ancient times these niches contained statutes of the various pagan gods and goddesses. Below is the Jordan River flowing downstream.

Some pictures of flowers from around the area.

These are poppies. Around this area are fields and fields of flowers.

Wheat fields along the way from the Galilee to Caeserea Philipi. You will see miles and miles of farms: wheat, soy beans, olive groves, and fruit trees.

More wheat fields.

This photo is taken from a sign at the site. This is an artistic rendition of what the site might have looked like and the different shrines there, including the “gate of hell” in the middle. This was a very pagan area so Jesus was in foreign territory so to speak, making Peter’s confession all the more powerful.
