F OR THE N EW Y EAR : R ESOLUTIONS, OR S.M.A.R.T. G OALS ? How to set and monitor progress on S.M.A.R.T. goals John L. Mohammed President Computer Committee Sacramento Professional Network Janjuary 8, 2013

I T ' S A N EW Y EAR : T IME FOR R ESOLUTIONS 2 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T. Goals? John L. Mohammed

N EW Y EAR ' S R ESOLUTIONS It's a tradition at the begining of each New Year that we take the opportunity to examine our life, and resolve to improve ourselves So, we tend to make "New Year Resolutions" Unfortunately, more often than not, we fail to live up to these resolutions Problem: the character of resolutions vague unmeasurable unattainable unrealistic intangible, without time bounds 3 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T. Goals? John L. Mohammed

W HY R ESOLUTIONS AREN ' T KEPT By setting unreasonable goals, we set ourselves up for failure Alternative: S.M.A.R.T. goals S.M.A.R.T. goals are: S - Specific M - Measurable A - Attainable R - Realistic T - Time bound and Tangible 4 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T. Goals? John L. Mohammed

A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. To set a specific goal you must answer the six “W” questions Who:Who is involved? What:What do I want to accomplish? Where:Identify a location When:Establish a time frame Which: Identify requirements and constraints. Why:Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal S PECIFIC 5 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T. Goals? John L. Mohammed Example General goal: "Get in shape" Specific goal: "Join a health club and workout 3 days a week"

M EASURABLE Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each goal you set. When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued effort required to reach your goal. To determine if your goal is measurable, ask questions such as…… How much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished? 6 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T. Goals? John L. Mohammed

A TTAINABLE When you identify goals that are most important to you, you begin to figure out ways you can make them come true. You develop the attitudes, abilities, skills, and financial capacity to reach them. You begin seeing previously overlooked opportunities to bring yourself closer to the achievement of your goals. 7 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T. Goals? John L. Mohammed

A TTAINABLE CONT ' D You can attain most any goal you set when you plan your steps wisely and establish a time frame that allows you to carry out those steps. Goals that may have seemed far away and out of reach eventually move closer and become attainable, not because your goals shrink, but because you grow and expand to match them. When you list your goals you build your self- image. You see yourself as worthy of these goals, and develop the traits and personality that allow you to possess them. 8 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T. Goals? John L. Mohammed

R EALISTIC To be realistic, a goal must represent an objective toward which you are both willing and able to work. A goal can be both high and realistic; you are the only one who can decide just how high your goal should be. But be sure that every goal represents substantial progress. A high goal is frequently easier to reach than a low one because a low goal exerts low motivational force. Some of the hardest jobs you ever accomplished actually seem easy simply because they were a labor of love. 9 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T. Goals? John L. Mohammed

R EALISTIC CONT ' D Your goal is probably realistic if you truly believe that it can be accomplished. Additional ways to know if your goal is realistic is to determine if you have accomplished anything similar in the past or ask yourself what conditions would have to exist to accomplish this goal. 10 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T. Goals? John L. Mohammed

T IMELY A goal should be grounded within a time frame. With no time frame tied to it there’s no sense of urgency. If you want to lose 10 lbs, when do you want to lose it by? “Someday” won’t work. But if you anchor it within a timeframe, “by May 1st”, then you’ve set your unconscious mind into motion to begin working on the goal. Goals can also be about recurring behavior: timeliness is then about establishing a frequency for the behavior - e.g., 3 times a week 11 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T. Goals? John L. Mohammed

T ANGIBLE The T can also stand for Tangible A goal is tangible when you can experience it with your senses: taste, touch, smell, sight or hearing. When your goal is tangible you have a better chance of making it specific and measurable, and thus attainable 12 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T. Goals? John L. Mohammed

J OB SEARCH S.M.A.R.T. GOALS Seeking employment is a full-time job, with a lot of different kinds of activities SMART goals relevant to your job search can relate to: the frequency with which you perform certain activities, e.g.: Researching a company Performing an Information Interview Applying for a position Networking enhancement of skills taking classes to improve skills, add certifications practicing skills through volunteer work 13 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T. Goals? John L. Mohammed

S ETTING Y OUR G OALS 1. Make sure your goal is something you really want not just something that sounds good your goal must be consistent with your values 2. Make sure your goals don't contradict each other 3. Develop goals in the 6 areas of life: 1. family and home 2. financial and career 3. spiritual and ethical 4. physical and health 5. social and cultural 6. mental and educational 14 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T. Goals? John L. Mohammed

S ETTING YOUR GOALS, CONT ' D 4. Express your goal in the positive rather than the negative work toward what you want, not what you want to leave behind 5. Write your goal out in complete detail 6. Make sure your goal is high enough 7. MOST IMPORTANT: write down your goals act of writing them down sets the process in motion in your unconscious mind enables you to review them enables you to remain focused on them 15 1/8/2013 Resolutions or S.M.A.R.T.
