UMG discussions Two main streams Systems and policy  Central university action Cultural change  How people think & act  Local level action Local leadership Consistent over time

What do we know about complex change management? A diverse group of people work together on the issue Patronage is provided by the University for this work  Rewards provided for success  Champions / Sponsors actively involved Time lines are in place, which require focused work within an achievable but challenging timeframe Project teams are allowed to self-select and self- organise Ownership and responsibility is engendered

Aims of Initiative Reduce leave liability while maintaining sensitivity to work-life balance Encourage ownership of leave management through a team approach at local level with champions (Heads/Deans) leading by example Increase cross-university sharing of ideas and enhance collegiality Provide you with a reward for successfully completing you chosen project

How it works Form a team of your choosing  Some guidelines Decide the project / your objective Develop performance indicators Decide a reward  Monetary or non-monetary  Individual or group Agreed by SDVC Get started (Feb – August 2008)

Team formation Must benefit more than one work unit (eg 2 or more schools, 2 or more faculties, 2 or more units or sections, etc)  representation from the requisite areas Will include both school/faculty and central administration representative/s. At least 2 academics in the project team (if academics in your area).

Other points SDVC will champion this  Will talk to Deans Share progress each UMG meeting (10 mins)  Co-operative not competitive Final presentation in August  To share ideas  To get prizes  Lunch to celebrate

Why do it? Solve a worthwhile problem Work with diverse group of people Breaking down silos Gives you profile in UWA Can win a reward of your choosing and You have to deal with this issue anyway!

Next steps Between now and February 2008 Form a team using guidelines Decide your project Decide your indicators Decide your reward Start thinking and acting …. Send outline (project, team, PI & rewards) to UMG Exec late January Attend UMG Feb 2008 to launch
