BBSRC PIPS – Professional Internships for PhD Students  The BBSRC will be introducing a compulsory internships for all PhD students  Broad Guidelines  3 months with the 4 years  Work unrelated to the research  Wide range of opportunities

Newcastle Medical Sciences Internship Schemes Intern Scholarship Scheme  Up to three months following thesis submission  Available for all PhD students to apply  Students must source and arrange their own internship  Applications made to the Graduate School and awarded competitively

Newcastle Medical Sciences Internship Schemes The MRes/PhD Internship  A five week internship in August and September  Available for all MRes/PhD students  Organised by the Graduate School  Express your interest in working with any of a list of organisations  Relocation expenses paid

Who with? A broad range of internships will be offered examples would include  Companies e.g. Demuris, ORLA Proteins, Leica Microsystems  Policy makers e.g. Newcastle Council or Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust  Educators e.g. Local Schools, FE Colleges, Centre for Life, Libraries or Museums  Charities or Not for Profit organisations e.g. Arthritis UK or Cancer Research UK

What about my research project Internships have been timed to have minimal impact on your research work You will be expected to start with you PhD project during this time if you don’t engage in an internship A two week holiday period will still be available during the summer Supervisors should be supportive of you taking an internship
