First built as a simple, wood frame Italianate house in 1856, the Mansion experienced a number of transformations before it was rebuilt in 1887 into the Queen Anne style home seen today. Samuel Tilden was the first governor to live in the Mansion in In 1877, the state purchased the structure and surrounding grounds and it has been home to Governors and their families ever since.
