SJMC Internships 101 Information Session

What we will cover…  When do I do an internship?  How do I get an internship?  Am I elibigile to receive MC course credit?  Getting registered for the internship course  The internship process

When do I do an internship?  When you become a full-status major, the sooner the better  When you pass the PUG Test or MC 1100B and complete the Intro to Mass Communications course.  Students should complete a basic skills course (Writing for Mass Media course, broadcast production) before accepting an internship in which such skills are expected. Use your judgment.

How do I get an internship?  Internship Fairs  Networking  Research  Assistance and Resume review:  Chuck Kaufman, SJMC Internship coordinator,  Visit Click “internships.”  Visit TxState SJMC Internships, Careers on Facebook. Like the page.  Allison Birk, Career Services,

Receiving course credit for an internship  A student must be in good academic standing (at least a 2.0 Texas State GPA) and full-major in the SJMC to receive MC course credit for doing an internship.  Students must receive credit the semester they are doing the internship as retroactive credit is not awarded.  A student can receive MC course credit for an internship in the fall, spring and summer.  A student may earn and apply up to six hours of MC internship course credit to their undergraduate degree.  A student should meet with their academic advisor to see where their internship(s) will fit in their degree.  A student must have a completed internship application before registering for the course.

Internship courses offered  MC 4130  Receives one hour of course credit  Must work at least 100 hours at internship  MC 4230  Receives two hours of course credit  Must work at least 150 hours at internship  MC 4330  Receives three hours of course credit  Must work at least 180 hours at internship

The internship application  The SJMC internship application can be found at  This application must be complete in order to receive a course override that will allow you to register for the your internship course.  An application must be complete for each internship you are receiving course credit for.

Internships are graded  Student internships are now graded with grades common to most courses — A, B, C, D or F  Students must attend an internship orientation session.  55 percent of the grade is based on the internship portfolio. Make sure the internship you receive provides ample opportunities to produce work samples that are worthy of review by future employers.  Students will complete a Midterm Report and make an appointment with Mr. Kaufman to discuss your progress.  A company profile, resume update, journal, completed evaluation by your supervisor and a “thank you” note complete the grading rubric.
