HIED program at ECU An overview

Focus and mission Content expertise in history/social studies disciplines Contact with the public schools in each of last three years of program – Year 2: observation in classroom – Junior 2: Practicum observation and teaching – Senior I: Intensive observation and frequent micro- teaching in field – Senior II: Intensive, full-time teaching internship in public school Cohorts of students to provide support and structure to development as a pre-service teacher

HIED program requirements Program completion leads to: – Undergraduate degree in History, secondary education AND/OR – Licensure to teach 9-12 social studies in the public schools

Program sequence Fall Year 1 – General education classes Spring Year 1 – General education classes

Program sequence cont. Fall Year 2 – General education classes – HIED 2123 Spring Year 2 – Begin major courses (HIST and social science cognates) – Finish general education courses – HIED 2123 (if not taken in fall)

Program sequence cont. Fall Junior 1* – HIED 3001 – Major courses – Have all Upper Division requirements met (apply for UD) Spring Junior 2 – HIED 3010 – Major courses – Apply for internship *Note: From the time you enroll in HIED 3001, it will take a minimum of two academic years to complete HIED program requirements. HIED courses in junior and senior year are only offered in the term specified (i.e. HIED 3001 will not be offered in the spring).

UD requirements These requirements must be met prior to being accepted to UD and prior to placement in an internship: – 2.5 GPA – Passing score on either SAT, ACT, or Praxis I – Successful completion of “Why I want to be a teacher” essay in HIED 2123 (submitted in taskstream) – Grade of “C” or better in HIED 2123 – Passing score on BITE 2000 challenge exam or successful completion of BITE 2000 – Disclosure of any prior criminal background – Satisfactory UD interview The UD interview process is conducted through HIDED The UD application process is completed at the end of HIED All UD requirements must be met prior to the round III internship application deadline (roughly at the end of SSI following HIED 3010 in spring) in order to be placed in the subsequent fall senior I internship. If UD requirements are not met by that point, the internship application will be pushed to the next academic year.

Program sequence cont. Fall Senior I – HIED 4010 – HIED 4323 – Complete all major courses – UD courses Spring Senior II – HIED 4324 – HIED 4325 – READ 3990

Advising in HIED Always come to EVERY advising meeting with an updated copy of your program checksheet and your most recent transcript You are your own best advocate and record keeper – my job is to help you understand the protocol for negotiating the program Always remember, I will be meticulous in my record keeping, but if I happen to make a mistake, you will still not graduate on time so keep careful records yourself

Advising in HIED Until you complete HIED 2123, you are under the advisement of an advisor in the COE advising center (135 Rivers) When you complete HIED 2123, if you are an undergraduate, you will be moved to a faculty advisor Licensure only students are advised by advisors in the COE advising center (135 Rivers) Teaching Fellows and Maynard Scholars are advised by a faculty advisor from freshmen year through graduation Many advising issues/topics are handled in HIED 3001, HIED 3010, and HIED 4323

Registering tips Issues with enrolling in HIED courses – contact me at Unfortunately, I only have say over what happens in HIED courses, so… Issues with enrolling in courses within the College of Education (EDUC, EDTC, SPED, READ) – contact COE Advising Center in 135 Rivers Issues with enrolling in courses outside of the College of Education (HIST, POLS, GEOG, MATH, etc.) – contact the department in which the program or course is housed (consult catalog or ECU website for that info) … therefore, unless you have an issue getting into an HIED course, contact those listed above when registering for those courses other than HIED
