Louisiana Purchase France secretly acquired territory from Spain in 1800 Napoleon needed $$ for war Jefferson offered to buy New Orleans but was offered the whole territory Bought it for $15 million Purchasing land not mentioned in Constitution… wasn’t Jefferson a strict constructionist ? He commits a hypocritical act “for the good” of the country.

Why the hand in the shirt? The 'hand-held-in' was a common stance for men of wealth and power. Many examples of this posture can be found in painted portraits dating from the early and middle 1700s, well before Napoleon's birth. "hand-in-waistcoat" posture was seen as... "manly boldness tempered with modesty."

C. Recognizing Effects What were the most important Results of the Expeditions into the Louisiana Territory in the early 1800s? Lewis, Clark, and Pike had exciting reports of what lay to the West. Travelers now had maps. There was a growing interest in the fur trade. Hunters and Trappers would bring back even more information. Pike’s expedition gave a mistaken view of the Great Plains as a treeless desert. He led Americans to believe that the Great Plains were useless for farming.

Jefferson’s Foreign Policy Only planned to deal with domestic issues However, that plan was doomed to fail Merchants involved in global trade Louisiana Purchase opened the country to westward expansion We also had little control over the actions of other countries

Impressment At first, we benefitted from foreign wars Got Louisiana Territory Trade increased French and British begin to threaten US ships by 1805 Did not want Americans to supply their enemies Also started impressing U.S. sailors Impressment: kidnapping of sailors to work on enemy ships Jefferson cut the size of the military by more than half to simplify government…..

Impressment, or kidnapping, of American sailors to work on British ships. Between , British impressed about 1000 American sailors

President Jefferson convinced Congress to declare an embargo (stop all foreign trade)  American ships could no longer sail into foreign ports  Closed American ports to British ships Embargo Act of 1807

Embargo! You can’t GO Into ports in Europe!
