Motivations Documented the experiences from real world Summarize the NAT64 scenarios and share experiences / lessons Encourage IPv6-only discussions and Intend to help operators who may just start out planning NAT64 in the near future –RFC6136 reported at least 30% operators plan to run some kind of translator (presumably NAT64/DNS64) A good example is RFC6586; Link to it was suggested –This draft is more specific on NAT64 network planning

Changes since IETF#83 Version 01~02 –More operators joined the work –Merged NAT64 considerations from draft-sunq-v6ops- contents-transition –Added NAT64-CGN&CE terminology descriptions –Added discussions on CGN port allocation methods Version 02~03 –Incorporated texts proposed by Joel Jaeggli (thankful for the contribution and guidance) and improved the legibility of the document –Consolidated the statement on the standpoint of NAT64-CE and identified issues accordingly

What we are documenting NAT64-CGN –IPv6-enable for IPv4 services in large scale –Operators have no control on IPv4 sides –retro-fitting to predominate IPv4 networks Dual-stack and E2E native IPv6 communications are always recommended Transition technology is always a second-best solution. It should be treated prudently NAT64-CE (Load Balancer) –“Edge” is mostly indicated to “LB” –IPv6-enable for the servers which is IPv4-only capable –have full control over on IPv4 side –Leverage IPv6 infrastructures LB

Discussion on the list Suggested adding discussions on the concern of logging amount –Characterize the amount of logging in typical usages –Discuss tradeoff between address multiplexing efficiency & logging storage compression Refinement of descriptions –Clarification of terms of NAT64-CGN & -CE –The content should be focused on issues identification to each scenario –The recommendations for deployment need to be simple and unambiguous –Scenarios which are perilous are not recommended

Discussion on the list (Cont.) Identify issues in NAT64-CE case –For source tracking: source address loss is unacceptable; There is no a desirable alternative to resolve the problem in an address sharing context –For translation: IPv6 space DOES NOT fit in IPv4 –For scalability: an expensive state-wise would result in additional latency and bottleneck of memory depletion Position to NAT64-CE deployment –It's NOT RECOMMENDED to operators who seek a clear precedent for operating reliable ipv6-only services, because the usages is problematic at several aspects –NAT64-CE(LB) suggestion is consistent with I-D.ietf-v6ops-icp- guidance (Section 7) for operators who already adopted the relevant solutions.

Status & Next Step An adoption call has been initiated on the list. More than 8 members shown their interests to the draft as a start point to gather operator’s experiences of NAT64 Comments provided by Chairs guide the document in a right direction; Texts have been updated accordingly We are still looking forward the encouragement from WG on adoption –Any feedback?
