Real-time Monitoring and Diagnostic Solution for an HVAC System ECE Team 169 Anthony Bellatoni (ECE) Greg Carmichael (EPhys) Joe Grassi (ECE) Sponsored by: Qualtech Systems Inc. Advisor: John Chandy

Presentation Outline Project Goals Explanation of HVAC ITE’s HVAC Qualtech TEAMS-Designer (what is unique?) TEAMS-RT (Visual studios we will use to develop C++) TEAMS-RDS Stored Sensor Values Limitations Project Timeline Project Budget Next steps

Project Goals Previous Senior Design Project –Developed Diagnostic Model of the ITEB HVAC System Fix model to be able to determine points of failure in HVAC system based on values outputted by sensors –Old model only has one VAV Develop C++ program extract and analyze real-time data from the building sensors Combine model and code to detect for faults in real-time.

What is HVAC? Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning o Heating : Hot water o Ventilation : humidity and air control o Air Conditioning : Removal of heat

ITE HVAC system Basement (heat exchanger) o Tunnel to COGEN plant Penthouse (Air handler) VAV (Variable air volume) o measured on every floor at every point in system

ITE Penthouse Schematics

What is a VAV?

Sensor Values & VAV

Qualtech Systems Inc. Located in East Hartford, Connecticut Software for system health management, integrated diagnostics and telemaintenance  Works on any system help improve equipment productivity TEAMS - Testability Engineering and Maintenance System

TEAMS Designer Modeler o Any complex system (MRI, Car, Building etc...) Designer Maps out possible failures (& consequences)

TEAMS - RDS Remote Diagnostic Server Main connection of TEAMS o Generates Tree Diagram (what could have gone wrong because of certain failure) o Possible solutions  With associated cost and time (designer determined) Stores information gathered for future analysis o TEAMS-KB (knowledge base)

TEAMS - RT Provides diagnostic in real-time Takes developed code & sensor values and assigns code to each component of model o each failure will have associated code to determine if it failed or not

Procedure

Project Limitations HVAC is a complicated Mechanical system o Many possible failures could occur Cost and Time of each failure Sensor values are on protected server o Need to obtain access

Project Timeline TaskSeptemberOctoberNovemberDecemberJanuaryFebruaryMarchAprilMay Software access Schematics Research HVAC Update model Learn C++ Develop code Merge code and model Test and debug Completed Nearing completion In progress Not started
