Engineering Department EN Cooling and Ventilation issues 1 FUTURE EXPLOITATION OF THE EAST AREA EN-CV Michel OBRECHT

Engineering Department EN Cooling and Ventilation issues  Objectives  Ventilation  Cooling  Conclusion

Engineering Department EN Objectives Ventilation :  Upgrade of the existing HVAC system for the next 25 years  Installation of air conditioning system for the primary zones Cooling :  Separation of the cooling water circuit for the primary zones

Engineering Department EN Ventilation : Upgrade of the existing HVAC system for the next 25 years HVAC existing system : Main Building : heating system connected to the overheated water network  Distribution network  8 Air Handling Units : 560 kW m 3 /h  Radiant panels :625 kW Ratio : 0,39 W/m 3 *K (SIA 380 standard : Ratio : 0,07 W/m 3 *K, 18% of existing) Barracks and Offices :  9 split system :45 kW

Engineering Department EN Ventilation : Upgrade of the existing HVAC system for the next 25 years HVAC existing system :

Engineering Department EN Ventilation : Upgrade of the existing HVAC system for the next 25 years HVAC existing system :

Engineering Department EN As buildExistingTargetSIA Maximum Heat losses [kW] Energy consumption [gWh/y] Energy cost [kCHF/y] Cost saving [kCHF/y] Ventilation : Upgrade of the existing HVAC system for the next 25 years Heat deperditions : improvements are needed for air tightness and insulation In order to avoid waste of energy and to improve ambient conditions, the insulation and the air tightness of the building has to be improved.

Engineering Department EN Ventilation : Upgrade of the existing HVAC system for the next 25 years Proposed solution :  keep the existing configuration  improve the thermal performance of the building to as build situation  replace :  the 8 AHU  the overheated distribution network  the electrical installation  the instrumentation and PLC  the barracks HVAC system  Cost estimation : 985 kCHF

Engineering Department EN Ventilation : Installation of air conditioning system for the primary zones No existing system Proposed solution : similar to nTOF target zone Primary zone in underpressure <50 Pa HVAC system including HEPA filtration on air extraction Cost estimation :260 kCHF Without proper air tightness, the underpressure and the static confinment shall not be achieved nor guaranteed

Engineering Department EN Cooling : Separation of the cooling water circuit for the primary zones RP requirement : avoid contamination of external demineralised water network User requirement : maintain the existing inlet temperature (25°C in summer) head loads : 700 kW

Engineering Department EN Cooling : Separation of the cooling water circuit for the primary zones Proposed solution : Installation of a seperate water circuit for primary beams Including a new cooling station separated from the existing one Cost estimation :1.200 kCHF Study to estimate water activation to be performed by RP To be validated : Operating modes (drains, access, maintenance,...) Location of new cooling towers, heat exchangers, pumps,...

Engineering Department EN Cooling and Ventilation issues Conclusion Cost estimation : Upgrade of the existing HVAC system 985 kCHF Installation of air conditioning system for the primary zones 260 kCHF Dedicated cooling circuit for the primary zones1.200 kCHF Manpower :1,25 FTE over 12 months Taking into account the CV workload until the end of LS1 and priorities defined for that period, the project cannot start in the coming months Related points : Building infrastructure improvement Barracks refurbishment
