Parachute Lab A force is a push or a pull that affects motion. Gravity is a noncontact force of attraction that exists between all objects. Friction is a contact force that creates resistance between two objects that are touching. Both of these forces affect an object falling towards Earth’s surface such as a parachute. The question here today is how much do these forces affect the object’s motion? Purpose: To determine how friction can affect the motion of an object.

Procedure 1. Gather the necessary data from the video entitled “How does friction affect an object’s motion?” 2. Create a graph based on the data table, which shows the motion of the washer with the parachute. 3. Analyze this data by answering the analysis questions and writing your lab conclusion.

What’s Happening in the Video? In the video you will see a metal washer dropped from a 4 meter height to the floor, this will be timed using a stop watch, data will be recorded Next you will see a parachute attached to the washer and it will be dropped from the same height, but we will measure the time it takes to fall to 1 meter, 2 meters, 3 meters, and then 4 meters – recording the data each time

Developing your hypothesis Hypothesis: I believe that friction will affect the washer’s motion by…. – Decreasing its speed by 10 times. – Decreasing its speed by 5 times. – Decreasing its speed by 2 times.

Do Now In your own words: What are we testing in today’s lab? How are we testing this?

Get ready to collect your data from the video

Parachute Lab Video

Double Check Your Data Height of Drop (meters) Time (seconds) 1m 1.83s 2m 2.85s 3m 3.30s 4m 4.76s Data and Observations: What was the time for just the washer to drop from a distance of 4m? 1.01 seconds Parachute Distance - Time

Now let’s work on the graph together Everybody grab a pencil!!! Let’s start by labelling your x and y axis – What should go on x? – What should go on y? Increments: – Each line on the graph is.2 – So 5 lines equals a whole number

Analysis Questions: 1. a- What is the formula for speed? b- What is the formula for average speed? 2. a - Calculate the speed of the washer traveling alone. show your work! b- Calculate the average speed for the washer with the parachute below. show your work!

Exit Pass Was your hypothesis correct or incorrect? Explain- back this claim up with proof from your data.

Analysis Questions: 3. How did friction affect the speed of the parachute and the washer? (Did the speed increase or decrease as friction increased? Why does friction affect the washer this way? Think about what we have learned about forces) **Bonus Question- Using this data, how would increasing the size of the parachute affect the speed of the washer? Explain.

How do I know if my hypothesis is correct? How much did friction slow the washer’s speed by? 3.96 /.78 = 5.08 – Friction decreased its speed by 5 times.
