Hose and Hose Fittings Service Delivery 3

Aim To provide students with an understanding of hose and hose fittings

Learning Outcomes Recognise the standard terminology in relation to hose and hose fittings Describe the construction of hose and associated fittings Describe how to care for hose and associated fittings. At the end of the session students will be able to:

Delivery hose Supplied in 25m lengths Either 45mm or 70mm diameter Some 90mm diameter hose stored on the hose layer at C7 Station, Barton.

Delivery hose The hose is non-percolating Consists of a plastic outer cover to resist abrasion Inside of the hose is lined with a water resistant coating Sandwiched in between is a fabric sheath made up of weft and warp yarns.

Characteristics of hose Flexible - easily handled without kinking Durable - resistant to abrasion Rot resistant - fibres treated for mildew Size - on charging, change in length and diameter should be minimal Friction loss bar per length Weight - approximately 550g per metre.

Hose care Store in a cool, dry, ventilated place Avoid scorching hose on the fireground Hose laid across roads should be ramped Under run hose before making up Hose should never be charged suddenly Hose should never be dragged when laying out or making up.

Hose-reel tubing Non-percolating Non-flattening Consists of a 19mm diameter rubber tube reinforced with 2 layers of synthetic cords, all covered with an abrasion resistant rubber 3 X 20m lengths of tubing are kept in each rear locker.

Suction hose Specifically designed to withstand external pressures Should not be charged to an internal pressure of more than 3.5 bar Constructed from steel reinforced rubber or from nylon and plastic Normally has an internal diameter of 100mm.

Suction hose.

Suction hose Care and maintenance; Wash after use with clean water Lubricate coupling nut and check washer Do not drag or drop couplings Correct size wrench to be used at all times.

Standard instantaneous couplings Pull release.

Standard instantaneous couplings Twist release.

McDonald hose-reel couplings

Suction hose couplings Usually 100mm diameter the male part consists of; Ribbed tail Two fixed lugs Threaded end.

Male coupling.

Suction hose couplings The female coupling consists of 3 castings; Ribbed tail Threaded sleeve Nut with 4 lugs and a washer.

Female coupling.

Suction coupling wrenches Conventional or universal types.

Branches “A” type Akron type controllable Diffuser.
