Purpose of RABC To avoid microbiological contamination of persons & products by laundry operation To provide defined microbiological quality of laundered goods Note, It is a valid and accepted Quality Management System to avoid microbiological problems by various measures. It is published as a European Standard (BS EN 14065) It is primarily for the protection of the consumers and the final users It gives the opportunity to work on internal standards and values

Personal Hygiene Humans are the most Critical Factor Hand Washing and Hand Disinfection are therefore the most important personal hygiene procedure. Be aware of what you are touching!! Always wear aprons & gloves!

Hygiene Laundry is a potential carrier of healthcare acquired infections. It is therefore vital to control its flow. Special measures must be taken to ensure hygiene levels are maintained. The laundry items themselves must not pose a threat to health and remain harmless at every stage of their storage, use and handling. Dirty laundry can spread germs to other areas and therefore the clean linen needs to be handled as carefully as the dirty.

Linen The primary way to prevent infection is to destroy harmful micro organisms when they are on vehicles of transmission, such as instruments, linens, gloves, clothes or even hands. - Therefore wear & then dispose of gloves / aprons regularly Bed linen and clothes are primary examples of vehicles of transmission. RABC is a procedure that ensures not only the decontamination of linen but also reduces the risk of recontamination via dirty linen, staff and equipment.

Current Regulations Water Regulations: All appliances require adequate backflow protection to prevent contamination of the pipe work supplying them – Generally Fluid Category 5 – Highest Risk All Electrolux machines are WRAS approved to meet with this Healthcare Regulations : HSG (95) 18 (Hospital laundry arrangements for used and infected linen) Currently under review –65 o C for not less than 10 minutes –71 o C for not less than 3 minutes BS EN (Laundry processed textiles bio contamination control system). –RABC – risk analysis and biocontamination control –RABC = HACCP, from food industry The Health Act 2006 (Code of Practice for the Prevention and Control of Health Care Associated Infections). Measures recommended under European Guidelines (RABC) Sorting –Sort laundry according to its origin e.g. use multicoloured lid trolleys –Collect textiles separately –Use red bags for soiled and infected linen. These should be in a separate section of the trolley. –Do not store dirty laundry for long periods

Sorting Cont. –Always use clean collection bags that close properly, are not overfilled and are in good condition –Do not bring dirty laundry into contact with clean laundry during transport –Mixed trolleys (clean and dirty) must never be used. –Both the dirty & clean laundry collection bag & support trolley must be regularly cleaned and disinfected.

Washing Recommendations –Decontamination of Linen (HSG 95 18) either 93, 71 or 65 degrees to THERMALLY DISCINFECT –Sluice washing will prepare the textile for washing and also help remove stains –Barrier laundry system to stop dirty and clean linen coming into contact with each other. –Transfer from Washing to Drying – minimise the handling of laundry. Maximum of four times.

Drying & Finishing Drying & finishing will also assist with the decontamination of the linen Use clean, separate trolleys for transfer back to the room / ward 17
