Jaypol™ HN70 polymer for Laundry Detergents

Jaypol™ HN70 polymer for Laundry Detergents Overview Manufacturers of powder laundry detergent may inhibit mineral salts from adhering to fabrics in the wash cycle with Jaypol HN70 polymer. The polymer works by modifying the tendency of mineral salts to crystallize in water Particularly in powder laundry detergent, where sodium carbonate builder reacts with calcium in the wash water to form calcium carbonate, Jaypol HN70 polymer may be used to inhibit fabric encrustation Including Jaypol HN70 polymer in powder laundry detergent formulations enables formulators to use builder such as sodium carbonate and virtually eliminate problems such as mineral salts encrustation, loss of color vibrancy, ‘graying’ of clothing and loss of texture

Jaypol™ HN70 polymer for Laundry Detergents Overview A maleic-based copolymer, Jaypol HN70 polymer is designed to function well in stressed wash water conditions that may include high pH/alkalinity, high levels of electrolytes and minerals. Helps to maintain the original look and feel of clothing Is compatible with common laundry detergent additives Substantially reduces mineral encrustation in the wash cycle without negatively impacting surfactant functionality

Jaypol™ HN70 polymer for Laundry Detergents Function A stable polymer technology in cold, warm and hot water wash conditions, Jaypol HN70 encrustation inhibitor generally outperforms polyacrylate technology. Typical Properties Appearance Clear colorless liquid Bulk viscosity About 60 cP (Brookfield RVT sp 1 @ 50 rpm, 25°C) Water soluble Solids content About 40% pH About 8.4 Molecular weight Very low

Jaypol™ HN70 polymer for Laundry Detergents Efficacy tests Factors such as hard water conditions and in situ formation of calcium carbonate in the wash water can be detrimental to clothing. In tests with black cotton knit fabric washed in hard water conditions using a standardized detergent formulation containing Jaypol HN70 encrustation inhibitor, the polymer helped to substantially maintain both original look and feel.

Jaypol™ HN70 polymer for Laundry Detergents Efficacy tests - protocol Fabrics: Black cotton knit fabric (Testfabrics 460B) was scoured in 400 ppm nonionic surfactant prior to use. The fabric was cut to 5” x 5” swatches and 5 swatches were included in each test. The total weight of the swatches was approximately 20 g. Water: Hard water was prepared by dissolving calcium chloride and magnesium sulfate in distilled water. A 3:1 molar ratio of Ca to Mg was used. Detergents: Detergents were prepared with concentrations of the following: 10% NaLAS, 5% Tomadol 25-7, 5% Sodium silicate 2:1, soda ash as noted, and 0, 0.5, 1, 2.5, and 5% active polymers with the balance being sodium sulfate. The detergent was dissolved at 10% prior to addition to the Terg-o-tometer buckets. The polymers were diluted to 10% and added to the detergent just prior to addition to the bucket. The detergent was added at a concentration of 2 g/liter of the active detergent. Washing conditions: 1 L of water 80 RPM 10 minute wash, 5 minute rinse Addition order: water, cloth, detergent Wring to 100% water pickup after rinse cycle, air dry between cycles 5 cycles

Jaypol™ HN70 polymer for Laundry Detergents Summary Modifies crystal habit of mineral salts in wash water to substantially reduce encrustation onto fabrics Maleic rich copolymer technology generally offers better inhibitor performance than polyacrylate technology Is ideal for use in powder laundry detergent containing carbonate builder Helps to substantially maintain the look and feel of fabrics washed in hard water “stressed” conditions
