PPE Safety glasses are to be worn at all times in the laboratory. Areas may be specifically designated and posted by Principal Investigator as not requiring eye protection. Laboratory gloves are to be worn in the laboratory only. Gloves are not to be worn in the hallway or elevators. Proper laboratory attire will be at the discretion of the Principal Investigator. Laboratory Hood Safety Hoods shall not be used for long term chemical storage Laboratory personnel need to test hood alarms in Kenan Labs daily. Open room doors near hoods and objects stored in hoods perturb air vortex inside hoods causing air to spill out of containment. The working position for vertical sashes is 18” above working surface (arrows are aligned). The sash position when a hood is not actively being used is closed (sash contacting working surface). Page 3 of 5 1/13/05 UNC Chemistry Department Best Safety Practices

Laboratory Hood Safety Dynamic barrier hoods Working position is sash closed, contacting the working surface in horizontal mode. Working position is sash raised to notch in vertical mode, glass panels closed. Standby position is sash down and panels closed. Use side ports to pass tubing and electrical wiring Be sure all panels and deflectors are installed in hoods. Check record on sticker on each hood for date of last EHS inspection and reading. Contact EHS if last recorded date is more than one year ago. Page 4 of 5 1/13/05 UNC Chemistry Department Best Safety Practices

Each laboratory will flush their eyewash stations weekly. EH&S will arrange to test and flush safety showers. It is recommended that spill snakes be made available in each laboratory. Stocking spill kits are at the discretion of the Principal Investigator. Page 4 of 5 1/13/05 UNC Chemistry Department Best Safety Practices

Emergency building evacuation North Carolina Fire Code requires that everyone must immediately evacuate the building under alarm. Use the nearest fire exit. Assemble in staging areas away from the building or exit to a connecting building separated by fire doors. Do not use elevators. Do not re-enter a building under alarm until the alarm has ceased. Do not block avenues of egress by storing items in corridors, stairwells or aisles. Flammable items are particularly hazardous. Page 5 of 5 1/13/05 UNC Chemistry Department Best Safety Practices
