Causes leading up to the Industrial Revolution

What was the Industrial Revolution? The Increased output of machine- made goods !

Villages feed themselves subsistence farming 1 of 3 fields left fallow (empty) Farmed in long strips Farming prior to the Industrial Revolution

Why do people need to make changes in England?  Need more efficiency  French Blockade  So, they start making some changes to the way they farm (called the Agricultural Revolution)

 Small farmers make agricultural changes  Food production increased  Population increased  urbanization (or moving to cities) Results of Agricultural Revolution

Enclosure Movement  New ways of farming lead to land consolidation  Inclosing land with bushes, fences, etc. to make land use more efficient  Land that had been “open” to everyone for cultivating now belonged to landlords. Peasants lost access to wood and water; many moved in to the cities looking for a better life.  Negative: Rich landowners enclose land and force peasants to move to cities  Positive: This increases crop growth and food production

Agricultural Revolution inspires The Enclosure Movement The Enclosure Movement provides population Urbanization

Cottage Industry and Early Capitalism

The First Industry: Textiles  Textiles  Cloth from cotton or wool to make clothing

Cottage Industries (also called the Putting-Out System) Merchants supply the raw goods Cottages spin the wool and cotton into yarnMerchants pick up the yarn and take to another cottage Next cottage weaves itNext cottage dyes it Merchants pick it up and sell. They pay a commission to the cottages.

Factories  Raw materials go in finished goods come out  What do you need to industrialize?  Labor  Capital ($$$)  Natural Resources

 An economic system based on private ownership, free competition & profit  Cottage industry is an example of early capitalism

Why Britain? Conditions in BritainSignificance in Industrialization

Why was Britain the first to Industrialize

Britain had… 1. Natural Resources 2. Labor  Large labor force  Educated labor force  Large middle class wanting to work 3. Stable Economy/ Stable Government  Due to the wealth of the New World they had a lot of gold and silver  Britain had just created a new, private banking system  They were not threated by war due to their isolation
