What is Peer Mediation? Involves two mediators who are neutral Discussions are confidential No blaming No judging No punishment Each person takes responsibility for their actions Feelings matter Completely voluntary Solving the problem or conflict is the goal

Mediation Process 1. Introduce Everyone 2. Set the Rules 3. Mediate the Conflict 4. Close the Mediation

Introducing Everyone The mediators as well as the students will tell each other their names before the mediation starts.

Setting the Rules Be willing to solve the problem Be truthful Be willing to listen to each other Be respectful-don’t commit FOULS Be willing to do what you agree to do

Mediating the Conflict Ask each person what happened and how it made him/her feel Paraphrase what each person says Summarize their perceptions of the conflict Ask each person what he/she can do to resolve the conflict Ask them to agree upon a solution and do it Ask each person what he/she could do differently in the future

Closing the Mediation Thank each person for working to resolve the conflict Remind them that everything said during mediation is private Ask them to tell their friends the conflict is resolved

Rules for Fighting Fair 1.Identify the problem. 2.Focus on the problem. 3. Attack the problem and not the person. 4.Listen with an open mind. 5. Treat a person’s feelings with respect. 6. Take responsibility for your actions.
