Many things can motivate you to do well in school.  Pressure from parents/family  Wanting a higher paying job  The desire to learn something you love  Pride in doing a good job  The prestige of having a college degree 3

Motivation Motivation is either  Intrinsic (internal): Your motivation to accomplish a goal comes from within you, and is determined by your own values and goals, or  Extrinsic (external): The motivation to attain your goal comes from outside yourself. Which of the following is NOT an example of an intrinsic motivator? A.The need to fulfill a longed for goal B.The desire to learn something you love C.Pressure from parents/family D.Pride in doing a good job 6

Motivation Intrinsic (Internal) Motivation  Is usually associated with high educational achievement and enjoyment.  Makes it much easier to stay academically motivated.  Give you a greatly sense of control of your actions and their results. Source: Source: LASSI Instructional Module: Motivation 7

Motivation Extrinsic (External) Motivation  It is more difficult to stay highly motivated when you only have external motivation.  Can some time have negative connotations, i.e. coercion or threat of punishment.  You feel less in control of your actions and their results. Source: Source: LASSI Instructional Module: Motivation 8

Intrinsic or Extrinsic Motivation  What you want to accomplish from your education can determine whether you are predominantly internally or externally motivated.  If you have a dream of being an artist or a nurse you might be more internally motivated to achieve your goals.  If you want a high paying job in the business or engineering field you might be more externally motivated to achieve your goals. 9

What is your primary extrinsic motivator to do well in school? A. I will have to quit school and get a job if I don’t. B.My family will be disappointed/angry with me. C.I will not be able to make as much money in the future. D.I will not receive the recognition of having a college degree. 10

What is your primary intrinsic motivator to do well in school? A. I will feel disappointed in myself if I do not finish my degree. B.I will not be able to learn about a subject I care about. C.I will not be able to fulfill my career goals. D.I will feel like a loser. 11

Motivation Extrinsic motivation can help you be academically successful if  you work harder so you won’t disappoint your family.  you take school more seriously because you know it is the way to a higher paying job.  you goals cannot be realized without a college degree. 12

Motivation Intrinsic motivation can help you be even more academically successful because  you set the standards by which you judge your performance.  you have a sense of self-satisfaction when you do your best.  your desire to attain your goals will continue even without an external motivator. 13
