“A Sound of Thunder” Jurassic Park excerpt

Notes, Regular notebook Style – the way a writer writes and uses language. Style is related to diction – word choice and sentence patterns. Style is related to imagery – these are images that are created in the reader’s mind when reading.

Notes: Imagery Imagery words and language that appeal to the five senses – sight, sound, smell, taste, touch. These can be things like, simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, etc. They may also be unique phrases and interesting ways that the author uses language.

Notes, Regular Notebook Exotic setting. This story takes the reader into two distinct settings. The distant future, where time travel is possible. The distant past, when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Though each setting is not practical, Bradbury writes in a way that makes it vivid to the imagination and believable.

Character List Keith – democratic president elected at the beginning of the story. Deutscher – Keith’s presidential opponent – the loser of the election at the beginning of the story. Eckels – a wealthy hunter seeking a new hunting thrill. Mr. Travis – the safari guide. Lesperance – Mr. Travis’ assistant. Billings and Kramer – two other hunters. An official of Time Safari Inc.

Let’s read!

What imagery is used to describe the time machine? (L.T. Style and Fig Language) Anti is a prefix that means “against.” According to the description of Deutscher, what is he against? (L.T. Style) Page 502 How does one kill a Tyrannosaurus Rex? (L.T. Reader Comprehension)

Encountering the Text 500 - 502. 4. Page 502 Mr. Travis states, “’Christ isn’t born yet, Moses has not gone to the mountain to talk with God. The Pyramids are still in the earth, waiting to be cut out and put up. Remember that. Alexander, Caesar, Napoleon, Hitler – none of them exists.’” What mood (feeling) is Mr. Travis trying to get across to the hunters? (L.T. Style) 5. Page 502 What is the purpose of the path? (L.T. Reading Comprehension) 6. Bradbury writes, “They sat in the ancient wilderness. Far bird’s cries blew on the wind, and the smell of tar and an old salt sea, moist grasses and flowers the color of blood.” List the sense imagery. What mood do the lines help create? (L.T. Fig Lang, Style)

For want of a mouse a Fox dies Eliminate future families Pages 502 - 503 Mr. Travis states, “Say we kill one mouse…” and ends with “So be careful. Stay on the path. Never step off.” Chart the Causes and Effects that Mr. Travis outlines in his argument. Use my example as a guide and create your own squares . (L.T. Reading Strategy, Cause and Effect) Cause Effect Cause Effect For want of a mouse a Fox dies Step on Mouse Eliminate future families 2. Does this argument seem to make sense? Explain. 3. Page 504 What is the Time Paradox? (L. T. Comprehension) Describe the way that Bradbury uses imagery in the following passage. “The jungle was high and the jungle was broad, and the jungle was the entire world forever and forever. Sounds like music and sounds like flying tents filled the sky, and those were pterodactyls soaring with cavernous gray wings, gigantic bats of delirium and night fever.” (L.T. Style)

Page 507 - 509 List the imaginative sound words that Bradbury uses to describe the dying T-Rex. (L.T. Style) Infer as to why the two men, Kramer and Billings, do not want to take a picture with the T-Rex. (L. T. Comprehension) What demand does Travis make of Eckels? Why? (L. T. Comprehension) What did Eckels step on, and what was the effect? List the subtle (slight, little) differences and the large differences upon their return. (L.T. Cause and Effect) What is the meaning of the ending line “There was a sound of thunder.” (L.T. Comprehension)
