Vocabulary Set 3 Write down the words, part of speech and definitions. The quiz on Friday will have ALL of these words, and SOME of the words from the previous weeks!

When the going get’s tough… 1. Convoluted (adj) Def: Intricate; complex. Sample: The directions were so convoluted that we drove all around the city and got lost. 2. Cryptic (adj) Def. difficult to comprehend The writing on the walls of the crypt was cryptic; none of the scientists understood it.

When the going gets tough… 3. futile (adj.) Def. having no useful purpose; pointless Sample: “It is futile to try to explain the difference between right and wrong to your pet.” 4. impede (verb) Def. to slow the progress of Sample “The retreating army constructed barbed-wire fences and destroyed bridges to impede the advance of the enemy.”

When the going gets tough… 5. obscure (adj. or verb) Def. Relatively unknown (adj) Def. to conceal or make indistinct (v.) Sample: “Scott constantly makes references to obscure cult films, and no one ever gets his jokes.” Sample: “The man in front of me was so tall that his head obscured my view of the movie.”

When the going gets tough… 6. quandary (abstract noun) Def. a state of uncertainty or perplexity Sample: “Ann was in a quandary because she had no soap with which to do her laundry.”

I’m a loser, Baby… 1. indolent (adj.) Def. lazy Sample: “Mr. Lan said his students were indolent because they had not done their homework.” 2. insipid (adj.) Def. uninteresting; unchallenging Sample: “That insipid movie was so boring and predictable.”

I’m a Loser, Baby… 3. lament (verb) Def. express grief for; mourn Sample: After Beowulf was killed by the dragon, the Geats wept and lamented his fate. 4. listless (adj.) Def. lacking energy Sample: Because he is accustomed to an active lifestyle, Mark feels listless when he has nothing to do.

I’m a Loser, Baby 5. melancholy (abstract noun) Def. sadness; depression Sample: Francis fell into a state of melancholy when her childhood pet died of old age. 6. torpor (abstract noun) Def. laziness; inactivity; dullness Sample: The hot and humid day filled everyone with an activity-halting torpor.

Notebook Check Thursday! Plan on leaving your notebook with me on Thursday. I will check that you have a spiral notebook with three sections. DMAs, notes, Vocabulary You should have 3 sets of vocabulary and definitions. You should have DMAs from these first 6 weeks of school. If you are absent when we have a DMA, please write 5 complete sentences or more about any topic of your choice. Please check in with a friend if you were absent and want to see if we had a DMA on that day. I will return your notebooks on Monday.
