Key Concept: Weathering and erosion work together continuously to wear down and carry away the rocks at Earth’s surface.

Weathering is the breaking down of rocks and other materials at Earth’s surface. There are two kinds of weathering: mechanical weathering and chemical weathering.

Weathering is caused by heat, cold, water, ice, and gases in the air Weathering is caused by heat, cold, water, ice, and gases in the air. For example, heat and cold crack rocks into smaller pieces.

Erosion (ee ROH zhun) is the movement of rock pieces and other materials on Earth’s surface.

Erosion is caused by wind, water, ice, and gravity Erosion is caused by wind, water, ice, and gravity. Erosion carries away the rock pieces made by weathering.

Key Concept: The causes of mechanical weathering include freezing and thawing, release of pressure, plant growth, actions of animals, and abrasion.

Freezing and thawing cause ice wedging.

In chemical weathering, the makeup of rock changes.

Rate of Weathering (pages 244–245)

Key Concept: The most important factors that determine the rate at which weathering occurs are the type of rock and the climate.
