“Your People Shall Be Volunteers” Psalm 110:1-3

Introduction Powerful text for revealing the character of God’s true people. This does not refer to those who volunteer in community, but to those who voluntarily submit to the will of God. The attitude is one that must be expressed in every aspect of our lives.

“In The Day Of Your Power” When Christ is glorified: Ps. 110:1; Acts 2:34-36 The Rod of His Strength Went Out From Zion. – Rod refers to judgment, law, authority, power. – Isa. 2:3-4: Parallel passage. – Acts 1:8: This refers to the word of God, the gospel. – Rom. 1:16: The gospel is God’s power for salvation. – Mark 16:15-16; 1 Thess. 1:8: It is also the standard of judgment.

“Your People Shall Be Volunteers” Willingly / Voluntarily: – Unlike the Old Covenant. – Those who come to Him will serve Him willingly and lovingly—they will choose to serve Him. Voluntary Submission: – Acts 2:41: “…gladly received his words…” – This began “in the day of His power” (Acts 2:34) – Rom. 12:2: Thus, God’s people are living sacrifices

The Character of Volunteers Complete Love for their Master: – Matt. 22:37: All of heart, soul, mind. – Matt. 10:37: More than any other. – John 15:13: Jesus is the ultimate example. Serve with Cheerfulness: 2 Cor. 8:3-4, 12; 9:7 Living as volunteers: – Voluntarily obey the gospel (Acts 2:41) – Serve to please our Master and not others (Mat 6:1) – Look for opportunities, not excuses. – Seek to serve, not have to be prodded. – Put God’s law into our hearts (Heb. 8:10).

Conclusion The gospel is available to all who wish to be one of His people. It is a life commitment, but it is well worth the cost (unlike serving sin). Some Christians do not give themselves freely. But those who understand the value of salvation and the righteousness of God will give themselves fully to Him without hesitation. 1 Cor. 15:58: “…always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
