Discover Project 2011 By Emma & Sarah

Introduction... Hello, my name is Sarah Burke and this is Emma Mulcahy. We are 2 nd year Travel and Tourism students from St. John’s Central College which is in Co. Cork in Ireland. Today we are going to present two organisations which are well known in Ireland for helping disadvantaged people. These organisations are called St. Vincent de Paul and Barnardos.

What they do... Barnardos work is child- focused. They respond to the individual needs of each child and family, and aim to provide practical and professional support to bring hope into situations where hope is sometimes lost. St. Vincent de Paul is an international voluntary Catholic Christian organisation. The Society has been in Ireland for 164 years and has extensive experience of working with a diverse range of people who experience poverty and exclusion.

How they work... Barnardos: This organisation offers a variety of specialised services to provide further support to children, parents and families, ranging from literacy support to assistance during difficult times such as coping with the death of a loved one to representing children in court. St. Vincent de Paul: The aim of the St Vincent de Paul Society is to tackle poverty in all its forms through the provision of practical assistance to those in need. Visiting the sick, the lonely, and the imprisoned form a large proportion of the Society's work.

How they raise funds... Barnardos: To raise funds this organisation holds a lot of fundraisers such as a climb up Mount Kilimanjaro in People can also contribute donations on the website. Barnardos also has charity shops around the country where 2 nd hand items such as clothing can be bought. St. Vincent de Paul: People can contribute donations on the website. St. Vincent de Paul also has charity shops around the country where 2 nd hand items such as clothing can be bought. To raise funds this organisation holds a lot of fundraisers such as a mini marathon.

Staff... Both organisations take on people that work voluntarily to help the disadvantaged. These people help out at the many charity shops based around Ireland. They also work directly with the disadvantaged as both organisations call to peoples houses with food, clothes etc. especially around Christmas. People that work with these organisations also help out at the many fundraising events.

Examples of Action... Fundraisers for Barnados in 2011 include: The Grand Canyon Trek in October Barnados 5K Bunny Run

... Fundraisers for St. Vincent de Paul include: Croagh Patrick 365 Floras Mini Marathon in June
