Human communication Chapter 7 Dr. Inas A.Hamid

 Most of people want a bit of rest and relaxation.  The term “message free” (without information content) might be used to describe the communication process in which most of human beings engage, just for fun.  The term “free” means absence of compulsion. It is not motivated by hunger, ambition or any motive other than the reward from the activity itself.

 Even when we are looking for knowledge, we like to be entertained.  A book has to be at least interesting to keep us reading.  Newspapers and magazines have to grab our attention with good writing and valuable information, or we will keep flipping pages.  Printed communication can also entertain. News of murder, airline crashes, or natural disasters can help readers to adjust to their environment and also provide them with enjoyment.

 Many researches distinguish play from work. Play is our free time, time for hobbies, stepping outside the world of duty and responsibility. Work deals with reality, with earning a living, with production.  On the other hand, some researchers agreed that “work and play” are not opposites. People may have fun through their work also both play and work may involve discipline.

 We can define play in terms of four criteria: 1.Play is activity that is pleasurable or enjoyable. 2.Play is a voluntary activity, freely engaged in, with no compulsion. 3.Play is activity that is an end in itself, done for pleasure or satisfaction it brings. 4.Play is an unrealistic, pretending, stepping outside the world of duty and responsibility.

Rewards of Play Enjoyment Satisfaction Pleasure Communication pleasure

 Stephenson makes the following comment: communication pleasure can be used for the word pleasure.  When two person meet; they are not trying to please one another, but afterwards they say how pleasant it was. This is communication pleasure. Chating

 The conclusion is when human communication is pleasurable, it can be defined as pure play when it is voluntarily or freely engaged in, conducted for the pleasure it brings.

 Many studies of media habits show that “educational programs’ have extremely small audiences, they switch to programs that entertain. The question arises now: (H.W) Does communication play exclude the use of the play theory in trying to educate or teach???
