BCSC Physical Education Waiver Columbus East High School Columbus North High School Columbus Signature Academy

Who can get a waiver?  Any student participating in an IHSAA sponsored sport during that semester (you must complete the season in good standing). *category 1  A student who completes one semester of general PE (and earns an A or A-) or successfully completes 1 semester of the waiver program are eligible to substitute advanced PE courses for their second credit. *category 2  Performing arts students participating in the marching band or school sponsored dance classes. Students must pass their performing arts class with at least a B- to earn the PE credit. *category 3  An athlete in an “Olympic training level” individual sport. There are stringent requirements here and will be handled on a case by case basis. *category 4

What Steps do I take?  Obtain the waiver information packet  Make sure you fit one of the 4 categories that are available  Get your parent’s permission!  Fill out & turn in the necessary forms  Talk to your counselor  Meet with the PE Waiver Teacher of Record

Waiver Deadline Dates SEMESTER 1  Aug. 20, 2010 – waiver application DUE to PE Teacher of record  Dec. 10, 2010 – waiver assessments, time logs, etc. DUE to PE Teacher of record SEMESTER 2  Jan. 7, waiver application DUE to PE Teacher of record  May 13, waiver assessments, time logs, etc. DUE to PE Teacher of record

How do I complete my waiver? Waiver I Assessment/Requirements:  12 journal entries  Complete all required paperwork (time logs, season ended in good standing, B- or better in class, etc) Waiver II Assessment/Requirements:  3 completed projects  Complete all required paperwork (time logs, season ended in good standing, B- or better in class, etc)

How do I complete my waiver?  Moodle will be used to complete the waiver assessments and turn them in to the PE waiver teacher of record.  You must be ORGANIZED and RESPONSIBLE for your own learning while completing your waiver semester!  Taking a PE waiver could be considered as an “independent study” of physical education.

When can I take a waiver?  You must complete your waiver requirements during the SAME semester that you are involved in the qualifying activity (IHSAA sport, marching band, etc.).  You can take the waiver option of category 2 only AFTER successfully completing another waiver category OR earning an A- or better in general PE.

Eligible Activities for PE Waiver (Categories 1 & 3) SEMESTER 1  Cheerleading?  Cross Country (both)  Football  Golf (girls)  Soccer (both)  Tennis (boys)  Volleyball (girls)  Marching Band (b&g)  CEHS Dance Class SEMESTER 2  Basketball (both)  Baseball (boys)  Cheerleading?  Golf (boys)  Gymnastics  Softball  Swimming (both)  Tennis (girls)  Track (both)  Wrestling *All sports listed above are IHSAA sponsored.

What happens if…..  I get cut from my sport? If you are cut from a team, or do not finish the season in good standing, you will not receive the credit from your waiver semester.  I don’t finish the assessment requirement? You will not pass your waiver semester and a resulting ‘F’ will be on your transcript. You will have to re-take a physical education class or waiver to meet graduation requirements.

What about Categories 2 & 4? CATEGORY 2  You MUST have successfully completed a previous waiver OR earned an A- or better in PE Individual Sports or PE Team Sports to qualify!  First semester Freshmen are not eligible for Category 2 Waivers. CATEGORY 4  This is for athletes participating in special circumstances.  Parents and students must contact either Mr. Gaddis or Mr. Gobert to request a category 4 waiver.  Category 4 waiver applications MUST be approved by BOTH schools.
