Now there is a circuit, and the bulb is on. Circuit-the path along which on electric current flows. (circle) Study this picture!

This circuit would have two lit bulbs. This circuit would have one lit.

Series circuit An electric circuit with only ONE path for the current (If one light goes out they all go out)

Parallel circuit An electric circuit with more than one path for the current (If one light goes out the others stay on)

Insulator – Any material that does not allow electric current to pass through it plastic rubber glass cloth wood like the protective coating on wires

Electromagnet is an electric circuit that creates a magnetic field. If the battery is disconnected the electromagnet CAN be turned off. A regular magnet can NOT be turned off. For an electromagnet to have a magnetic field it must be connected to a circuit. Electric currents produce magnetic fields. Electromagnets are used in motors. Can you draw this?

Electrical energy Electrical energy results from the movement of electrons. Electricity can be used to produce light. A toaster uses electrical energy to heat bread.

Compass In order to make a compass you must have a magnet The earth is one giant magnet A compass can detect the Earth’s magnetic field. Compasses all point the same way because of the Earth’s magnetic field. A compass is a magnet that can swing freely in any direction to detect a magnetic field.

Different charges attract Charges that are the same repel each other. Objects will attract or repel each other if they are charged. Clothes from a dryer will attract. Your hair will repel.

Magnets Magnets have 2 poles. North and South

What magnets repel? (repel=go away)
