“Too many students can’t see a clear connection between their program of study and labor market opportunities.” Pathways to Prosperity, February 2011, Harvard Graduate School of Education

“ Many drop out because they struggle academically. But large numbers say they drop out because they felt their classes were not interesting, and that high school was unrelentingly boring. In other words, they didn’t believe high school was relevant, or providing a pathway to achieving their dreams.”

In recent work out of the OISE, Student rated the sources of career information as follows: 1.Spending time ‘on the job’ exploring what a career involves on a day-to-day basis 2.Talking to people working in the career area you are interested in 3.A web-based tool that provides all the information you need to select a future career 4.Video clips of people talking about what they do in their career. 5.Interactive web sites (e.g. surveys, quizzes, careers game etc.)

Provision of career development has been in decline in many North American schools despite evidence of its effectiveness. There is a strong body of evidence which demonstrates that career development activity in schools can help young people to experience academic achievement, successfully transition to the labor market and live happier and more productive lives.

Helping students imagine the future they want to create “Your imagination is a preview of life’s coming attractions.” Albert Einstein “I wish The Real Game was MANDATORY for all students. The information and life experience it provides are more valuable than some required coursework. Giving our students the tools they need to be successful in “the real world” should be our first priority.” Tanya McKay, First Northern Bank, Woodland, CA, April 2011
