© What is the Career Map? An interactive and visual representation of the job titles and roles that make up the scope of HIM and the career pathways associated with them. Relationship with CAEL (Council for Adult & Experiential Learning) Broken down by 6 job families Organized by 4 skill levels 55 current job titles 13 emerging job titles Promotional and transitional paths Housed on HIcareers.comHIcareers.com

© Why a Career Map ? Career ladders are too restrictive, a map is needed in today’s workforce “Over is the new up.” 72% of respondents to a 2010 Right Management survey reported lateral moves when landing new jobs (Fortune Magazine) The landscape of health information is wide in scope and continues to evolve

© Methodology Discovery process by CAEL  In-depth interviews to understand how/why members would use a career map AHIMA workgroup- gather/refine data  5 volunteer subject matter experts refined a list of more than 100 roles down to the current 68 AHIMA Professional Practice Staff used as “data validators”

© Methodology continued AHIMA member pathway survey data  Surveyed AHIMA members on actual job pathways  2,429 responses- 20% response rate  Current role and two previous roles AHIMA salary survey data  Salary survey data mapped to career map roles for averages and percentiles  Nearly 8,000 actual HIM salaries in current data pool  Will continue to be updated

© What is the map’s purpose? Career development planning tool for students, new grads, HIM professionals looking for opportunities One place to see the many possible HIM career opportunities and becoming educated about them Illustrate the evolving nature of the industry, what will the future look like?
