Medicines Management Medicines Governance pack for Dentists 2009 A one page controlled drug declaration A prescription security declaration An information poster on dental patients who are taking anticoagulants A copy of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guideline on prophylaxis for infective endocarditis A table of appropriate antibiotics to be prescribed in dental infections

What do the CQC regulations say? Management of medicines The registered person must protect service users against the risks associated with the unsafe use and management of medicines, by means of the making of appropriate arrangements for the obtaining, recording, handling, using, safe keeping, dispensing, safe administration and disposal of medicines used for the purposes of the regulated activity.

Providing personalised care through the effective use of medicines Ensure the medicines given are appropriate person-centred by taking account of their: age (e.g. licence of drug, dosage regimens) choices lifestyle cultural and religious beliefs allergies and intolerances (e.g. penicillin, egg) existing medical conditions and prescriptions (e.g. contra-indications drug interactions) adverse drug reactions (e.g. penicillin, anaesthetics) recommended prescribing regimes. ( e.g. local formularies, BNF) A practice Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) should be produced to cover this

Manage risk through effective procedures about medicines handling For any drugs which the practice personally administers Clear procedures followed in practice, monitored and reviewed for medicines handling that include obtaining, Controlled drug private prescriptions safe storage, Controlled drug cupboard prescribing, SOP and SOP for controlled drugs dispensing, SOP to include labelling requirements preparation, SOP administration, SOP monitoring and disposal. SOP and SOP for controlled drugs

Systems should be in place to cover the following procedures: Risk Management Arrangements for reporting incidents, errors and near misses, NPSA reporting, prescription security, Arrangements to implement and act upon medicine related patient safety communications issued via the alert system. SOP, Documentation Up to date Patient Medication Record including a list of all medication taken. Compliance with controlled drug regulations. Clear procedures for the monitoring and review of controlled drugs. Accountable Officer. Previous package, More in new package Audit and investigation of incidents and near misses

People who use services receive care, treatment and support that: Ensures medicines required for resuscitation or other medical emergencies are accessible in tamper evident packaging that allows them to be administered as quickly as possible. These can be found in the dental section of the BNF or The UK Rescusitation Council has information on dentist requirements
