Determination of the Ideal Gas Constant Go to browse and the full screen.

Equipment required pipette bulb 400 mL beakers Florence flask rubber stopper and tube assembly stand test tube clamp Bunsen burner and striker gas tap

Make sure the test tube is clean and dry. Use the Bunsen burner to dry the large test tube. needle valve air inlet ports mixing barrel gas tap

ignite the Bunsen burner… …adjust the Bunsen burner to get appropriate flame (inner blue cone).

Dry the large test tube using the inner blue cone of the Bunsen burner.

Weigh 1.0 g of the potassium chlorate/manganese(IV)oxide mixture.

Accurately weigh the test tube and the contents on the analytical balance.

Fill a 500 mL Florence flask with tap water and place about 150 mL of tap water into a 400 mL beaker. Fit the stopper with two tubes into the Florence flask.

Attach a pipette bulb to tube and squeeze it to force air into the system. Check that there is a continuous water connection between the flask and the beaker..pinch the tubing..

..unpinch the tubing and raise the beaker until the water level in the beaker is the same as the water level in the Florence flask.....pinch the tubing and attach the stopper into the test tube..

..re-pinch the tubing and transfer the tubing into the dry 400 mL beaker.

Have the apparatus checked by an instructor before proceeding. It should resemble the picture.

Gently heat the test tube with a Bunsen burner. Heat slowly at first, then increase the flame and continue heating until no more water is forced from the flask into the beaker.

After the apparatus has cooled, adjust either the height of the flask or the beaker until the levels of the water in each are equal…..then pinch the tubing and remove it from the beaker …

Use the triple-beam balance to determine the mass of the beaker and expelled water, and then of the emptied and dry beaker.

Accurately determine the mass of the cooled test tube and contents.
