B ELL W ORK Place signed syllabus in basket on front counter. Take out a sheet of paper and write down 3 – 5 lab safety rules and/or procedures that you remember from 6 th and 7 th grade. You are to work quietly and alone.

Hands-on experiences are essential to learning in science class, but safety must be the first concern! The following rules exist for your safety. These rules help to prevent accidents in the lab and allow for more efficient work to occur.

When first entering the science room, do not touch any equipment, chemicals or other materials until you are instructed to do so. NEVER enter the room if unsupervised (you don’t see me, don’t come in!)

Stay focused & pay attention to all written and verbal instructions. Ask questions before proceeding if you are unsure. Know what you are to do before you do it.

Misbehavior CANNOT and WILL NOT be tolerated! Don’t monkey around! Immediately notify your teacher of any unsafe conditions you observe. Work with your group at your station only (that means Group #1 is not across the room with Group #4)

Report all accidents immediately, no matter how small. This includes broken glass, cuts and scrapes, chemical spills and fire. Learn the proper techniques for handling these accidents. Remain calm!

P LEASE NOTE THE LOCATION AND PROPER USE OF THE FOLLOWING LAB SAFETY EQUIPMENT : Fire Extinguisher Safety Shower Eye Wash Station Fire Blanket Fire Alarm Electrical Turn Off Button Call Button

W EAR SAFETY GOGGLES AND, WHEN NEEDED, GLOVES WHILE ENGAGING IN LAB ACTIVITIES. Proper dress for lab includes: Tying back long hair Removing dangling jewelry Rolling up long sleeves Securing baggy clothing

NEVER eat or drink in the lab.

Keep hands away from eyes, mouth and body while using chemicals. Wash your hands with soap and water after performing lab activities. NEVER touch, taste or smell any chemicals unless specified to do so.

Note the “SAFETY Cautions” on your lab papers before conducting lab activities.

In fairness to others, clean all glassware, lab ware, and equipment at the end of the lab. This includes wiping down your area. Return all equipment and supplies to the proper storage area.

The answers are … Don’t eat or drink while in the lab. Don’t fool around during a lab. Always wear safety goggles when doing an experiment Always point test tubes and other items away from yourself and others when heating. Keep hair and other flammable objects away from flames. Don’t leave a flame unattended.

You and your parents must agree to and sign the safety contract in order to participate in lab activities.

Failure to comply with safety guidelines may result in your removal from the class and loss of credit for the work that is done in your absence. Remember I must trust you to do the activities, if I can not trust you then you will be given an alternative assignment

Practice SAFE Science
