Essential Question:  How do biologists work safely?

Procedure: Safety Rules & Demo Location of emergency equipment. Safety Scenarios Explain Lab Safety Contract Create lab safety flipchart

Safety Rules: Dress Code 1. Wear safety goggles whenever you are working with chemicals, burners, or any substance that might get into your eyes. Never wear contact lenses in the laboratory. 2. Wear a laboratory apron or coat whenever you are working with chemicals or heated substances. 3. Tie back long hair. 4. Remove or tie back any hanging article of clothing.

Goggles should remain on until all students have finished cleaning up after the lab – there is still potential for chemical splashes and broken glassware during clean-up

When do student’s need to wear goggles?

If a chemical splashes in your eye(s) or on your skin, immediately flush with running water for at least 20 minutes and notify the teacher immediately

No sandals during lab Closed-toe shoes will be worn during lab

Keep flammable liquids away from an open flame Long hair should be tied back

Circumstances requiring eye- protective devices Anytime a student is engaged in an activity or is observing the use of hazardous substances likely to cause injury to the eyes Working with hot metal Working with hot liquids or solids or with chemicals that are flammable, toxic, corrosive to living tissues, irritating, strongly sensitizing, or that generate pressure through heat, decomposition, or other means Working with materials or equipment under stress, pressure, or force that might cause fragmentation

Safety Rules: General Safety Rules 10. If spills occur, ask your teacher immediately about the proper cleanup procedure. Never simply pour chemicals or other substances into the sink or trash container. 11. Never eat or taste anything or apply cosmetics in the laboratory unless directed to do so. 12. Know the location and proper use of safety equipment. 13. Notify your teacher of any medical problems. 14. Keep your laboratory area clean.

Safety Rules: General Safety Rules 5. Never “horse around” in the laboratory. 6. Be prepared to work when you arrive in the laboratory. 7. Read all directions for an investigation several times. 8. Never perform activities that are not authorized by your teacher. 9. Never handle any equipment unless you have specific permission.

No food or drink in the lab No horseplay, practical jokes or pranks in the lab

Safety Rules: Heating and Fire Safety 19. Never use a heat source such as a candle or burner without wearing safety goggles. 20. Never heat a chemical you are not instructed to heat. 21. Maintain a clean work area and keep all materials away from flames. 22. Never reach across a flame. 23. Make sure you know how to light a Bunsen burner. 24. Point a test tube or bottle that is being heated away from you and others. 25. Never heat a liquid in a closed container. 26. Never pick up a container that has been heated without first holding the back of your hand near it.

In case of an emergency be sure all containers are closed and gas valves and electrical equipment is turned off

Should students wear safety goggles when heating water? Do you see any safety violations in this picture?

Safety Rules: Using Chemicals Safely 27. Never mix chemicals for the “fun of it.” 28. Never touch, taste, or smell a chemical that you do not know for a fact is harmless. 29. Use only those chemicals needed in the investigation. Keep all lids closed when a chemical is not being used. Notify your teacher whenever chemicals are spilled. 30. Dispose of all chemicals as instructed by your teacher. To avoid contamination, never return chemicals to their original containers. 31. Be extra careful when working with acids 32. When diluting an acid, pour the acid into water. Never pour water into the acid. 33. Rinse any acids off your skin or clothing with water.

You are working on a lab activity which involves the use of concentrated hydrochloric acid. You begin to smell an unusual odor in the classroom. What actions do you take?

When do you add water to acid? NEVER ADD WATER TO ACID – YOU SHOULD ADD ACID TO WATER

Safety Rules: Using Glassware Safely 34. Never force glass tubing into a rubber stopper. 35. Never heat glassware that is not thoroughly dry. 36. Never pick up glassware without first checking to see if it is hot. 37. If you are instructed to cut glass tubing, fire polish the ends immediately to remove sharp edges. 38. Never use broken or chipped glassware. 39. Never eat or drink from laboratory glassware.

Safety Rules: Using Sharp Instruments 40. Never cut material toward you; cut away from you. 41. Be careful when handling sharp, pointed objects such as scissors, pins, and dissecting probes. 42. Notify your teacher immediately if you cut yourself or receive a cut.

Safety Rules: End-of-Investigation Rules 50. When an investigation is completed, clean up your work area and return all equipment to its proper place. 51. Wash your hands after every investigation. 52. Turn off all burners before leaving the laboratory. Check that the gas line leading to the burner is off as well.

Location of Emergency Equipment: Safety Shower Eye Wash Station Fire Extinguisher Gas Value Shut-off Goggles Cabinet Apron Cabinet First Aid Kit

Safety Scenarios: Look at each of the following drawings and explain why the laboratory activities pictured are unsafe. 4.

Do you see anything wrong in this picture?

Why are students not allowed in the lab storage room?

Steps to Prove You are a Responsible Science Student Read lab safety contract Follow all lab safety procedures Notify the teacher immediately when a lab accident occurs Correct your classmates when they fail to follow lab procedures Follow instructions

Where and Why Science Accidents Occur Student failure to read and understand instructions Failure to enforce safety in the lab Poorly written lab instructions Overcrowded science classrooms Overcrowded science classrooms

Minimize your movement around classroom Bookbags should be placed out of the way and not in the aisles Listen carefully to all instructions Ask questions when in doubt Overcrowded Classrooms

Safety Flipchart: See Exemplary Work on Board

Safety Contract: Students and Parent/Guardians must read and sign the contract. Due date is January 14 th
