Presentation transcript:

What is Flame Emission Spectroscopy? It is a Scientific method of identifying a substance. –Also a Way to make Nice Colours… All things, when burned, give off Light energy The wavelength of this varies by element If you can Identify the Wavelength (using something like a Spectroscope) you can Identify the Element To do this… Metals are made into a salt, and stuck (in lumps) on to various burny things next to a spectroscope Fire is pwetty…

What Equipment is Required? Depending on which method you choose, Either… –“Lump on a Burner” Meeker Burner Spectroscope –“Metal Loop in a flame” thingy Piece of metal wire which will not interfere with your results –Holds the Burnable Source of fire –E.g. Bunsen Burner, Magic, Meeker Burner Spectroscope

Health & Safety You’re required to burn stuff, which provides a rather large hazard on its own –“Fire Bad, Tree Pretty”… Most Methods also include the use of Hydrochloric Acid, which is corrosive –Don’t put it on or in yourself Depending on the substance you’re burning, it could give off potentially dangerous chemicals. –Use a Fume Cupboard mayb.? Big heavy Science equipment (Well, probably quite small) –Don’t drop it on yourself… There’s probably some glass in it somewhere –Sharp and Pointy!! :D

What is it used for? To identify stuff –Should probably write more there… It is a more fun alternative to the other kinds of spectroscopy, such as Mass Spec., IR Spec, and the significantly more accurate Nuclear Spectroscopy –As well as all the other kinds of spectroscopy, there’s quite a few… Clearly her helmet is made of Caesium, Lead, copper Chloride or calcium…

Accuracy Is vair Accurate, assuming you have a correctly calibrated Spectroscope… –If not, you’re screwed. Assuming you’re doing the test for something of vital importance that will result in some kind of severe punishment for failure, if not you’ll just have incorrect results. Which isn’t the end of the world. Unless it is, in which case, why did they trust you?

Qualitative Using the more recent definitions I was given, This test is Qualitative. It tells you what it is, not a quantity…

How to prepare samples With Acid and Deionised water –Assuming you’re testing a metal… Put your sample In hydrochloric acid, to remove any contamination Wash with Deionised water, also to remove any contamination… Try to keep it clean until you burn it…

Conclusion summary thingy Everyone loves Fire…
