Photosynthesis: a series of chemical reactions that convert light energy, water, and carbon dioxide into the food-energy molecule glucose and give off oxygen Chloroplast: a membrane-bound organelle that uses light energy and makes food-a sugar called glucose- from water and carbon dioxide in a process known as photosynthesis Glucose: a sugar that is an end product in photosynthesis Chlorophyll: green, light trapping pigment in plant chloroplasts that is important in photosynthesis Radiant energy: energy carried by an electromagnetic wave (sunlight)

Chlorophyll Chloroplasts contain the plant pigment chlorophyll. Pigments are chemicals that absorb and reflect light. Most plants are green because chlorophyll reflects green light and absorbs the other colors of light.

What’s Happening? CO2, H2O, and H2 come in through the stomata, which are on the underside of a leaf Chlorophyll traps and stores sunlight (radiant energy) converting CO2 from the air into sugars Carbon dioxide (CO2) combines with hydrogen (H2) atoms from the splitting of water (H2O) molecules Plants either use the sugar (glucose- C6H12O6) as an energy source or store it.
