“The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Peter Drucker “Using Etiquette Inclusion helps you create the future you want” Monica Black

Etiquette What is it?  It is an unlimited set of rules of good manners & behavior  It comes from an old French word meaning “ticket” Why is it important?  *Success in getting, keeping and advancing in a job is 85% people skills and 15% technical knowledge and skills Let’s think of etiquette as your people skills ticket to find your place within the organization and create your path for success. *Statistics from 3 separate research projects by Harvard, Carnegie Foundation and Stanford Research Institute

General Business Etiquette 101 Appearance Employees are visual representations of the companies they work for and should dress accordingly. If the office environment is:  Traditional Business  Relaxed Business  Business Casual Remember:  How you dress plays a role in how others see you.  Dress for the role or career you want and deserve!

General Business Etiquette 102 Eye Contact & Handshake  Focused eye contact displays confidence on your part, it also helps you understand what the other person is really saying verbally and plays a large part in conveying interest in the person and conversation.  A vital component you need to bring to any interpersonal encounter is a firm handshake. Those few seconds you "shake" can empower or weaken a relationship.  Hold the person's hand firmly.  Shake web-to-web, three times maximum.  Maintain constant eye contact.

General Business Etiquette 103

Don’t Forget  Be Friendly  Ask Questions  Learn How the Equipment Works

Don’t Forget  Be Proactive  Seek out Mentors  Don’t Overdo It!

Remember  Etiquette Rules come from the outside & are always changing  A persons feelings are always more important than strictly adhering to the rules  Knowing the ”rules” is essential because it puts you in the position of knowing when it is appropriate to use them.  The most important thing is to do your best, ask questions if you need to and be friendly and courteous.  *Success in getting, keeping and advancing in a job is 85% people skills and 15% technical knowledge and skills.
