“You’ve got to be cruel to be kind…especially if your hungry!”  Complete “Voices of the Gods” handout  What different tones did the class come up with?

 Select the Greek god that you think is the best of all.  Use the information page to complete the brainstorm Explain any misdeeds using the voice of your selected mythological god. Be creative. Just like in the presidential election, promises are made to persuade the audience to vote for the candidate. Use your god’s divine powers to make plans for the future. (Hades might promise to turn the thermostat down a little so that it is a more comfortable eternity in the underworld).

2 paragraph speech:  Audience- a group of mortals  Purpose- to convince them to vote for your selected Greek god as the “Mythological Idol”  Remember- you are emphasizing voice so show your personality. Use OREO to develop your speech: Opinion Reasons Examples Opinion

Opinion: I, Ares, god of violence and warfare, am the best god of all! Reasons: Since I frequently control the life and death of humans, I am clearly important. Also, I am fierce and confident, which are traits that a leader needs to have. Examples: I was responsible for the Trojan War. I also am the reason there is no world peace! I have fire-breathing horses, which shows how fierce everything associated with me is. Opinion: Just remember, a vote for me as the best god is a vote for protection from your enemies on the battlefield of junior high!

Voice Rubric- Rate the speeches 1-4 on the following criteria.1 being the lowest, 4 the highest. _____The author uses appropriate tone for the audience _____The reader knows how the author feels about the subject _____The author has a new or unique perspective on the topic _____ The author has made a personal connection to the topic and the audience.

What was it that persuaded you to vote the way you did?
