Communism is spreading! Communists use fear to gain power –NO freedom, private property, or religion –Stalin killed his own people who spoke out against his govt. (gulag) US was afraid commies would take over the world!

U.S. Response Containment: US tries to stop communism from spreading any further!

Truman Doctrine March 1947: support free people who are resisting armed takeovers $400 million to Greece & Turkey to fight commies It works! Gr & Turk remain free

Marshall Plan Feb. 1948: US will give $$$ to any country who needs assistance – food, equipment, etc. $12.5 billion

Barely approved by Congress – but the communist takeover in Czechoslovakia convinces them to act! Soviet Union & satellite nations do not accept the $ - why not? Rebuilds W. Europe!
